I just can't understand Milan's logic. They got rid of Pirlo their most creative player and brought Aquilani who apart from few good displays failed at us last season, brought Nocerino very mediocre player. I think Milan gave us the best present we could wish for. All summer Galiani talked about Mister X, and I peeked now and then on their forum just to see them hoping to get Nasri or Fabregas and in the end they got two average players at best. What an idiots.
It's because they decided they wanted a real DM in front of the defence (Van Bommel) and are looking for mobility from the other midfielders.

Given the lack of good movement from Milan, there was really no point in them keeping Pirlo just to nudge simple passes around or hoof long balls to Ibrahimovic.

Can't really blame Milan for sticking with the formula they won the title with last season.

They already had plenty of DM's in form of Gattuso who played excellent last year, Ambrosini, Flamini and to add MVB in January and Nocerino now without replacing Pirlo properly is failure for me. It's not all in runninng because if it was you could put 11 athletes without any football inteligence and ask them to run entire game. You gotta have creativity in midfield and specially good balance and Milan lost that. You can't play with 3 DM's. We have seen it last night. They got Aquilani as Pirlo's replacement but his skills compared Pirlo's ( passing, set pieces, shooting, dribling, vision, reading play) are let's say inferior. He is also not that mobile. Last year they won scudetto but in the first part of the season Pirlo played and after he got injured Allegri benched him. You can say results back his decision, but the team already had confidence and winning mentality to win even when they played badly. I predict failure for them this season. They are just full of old players and to expect from them to play 60 games is unimaginable. Just look at their midfield: MVB 34, Seedorf 35, Gattuso 33, Ambrosini 34. I can't see any mobile players there, maybe in the first half but later not so sure. If Aquilani is their Mr. X then they lost it.

Last night didn't prove three DMs doesn't work.

Milan played Aquilani and tried to keep possession, but didn't do it well.

They'd have been better off playing three DMs, sitting deep and hitting Napoli on the break, rather than giving Napoli the chance to break.

Oh, and I'm not saying Milan were right to get rid of Pirlo.

I'm merely explaining what I believe the logic was behind the decision.

They played with MVB, Nocerino as DM's and Seedorf who should have played LM but lately most of the time he is more in front of his goal then opponents. Aquilani is not AM altough Allegri played him there, don't know why he isn't good enough. He is more of a CM, so basically Milan played with 2 DM's, one LM who doesn't have strength any more to play both ways, and CM. I agree with part that it would be better for them to sit back, but they seem unbalanced to me.

Pirlo played early part of last season, got injured, missed most of the season and then lost his place.

True Milan won the Scudetto basically without him, but Milan getting rid of him was still a big mistake IMO. I think they should have offloaded Gattuso and Seedorf before even thinking of getting rid of Pirlo. And if they think Aquilani can be a suitable replacement for Pirlo then LOL.

I'm a lil worried about overusing Pirlo. I mean, maybe it's just me but he always appears tired to me. We should rest him whenever we can.

Milan won the title last year, because of ibrahimovi, and the massive failure of their opponents.

Juve kept up second, while never winning 3 games in a row. and then exploded
inter, thanks to benitez and massive injuries, played horrific.
roma also was non excistant.

their main challengers were

napoli, because of the frontline
lazio, because of 3 decent players
udinese, because of 3 good players and an otherwise weak team

this is comparing against precalciopoli milan and juventus.

Ibrahimovic had a godlike first half of the season, and with a very good silva and attackers, they outlasted untill the title.

Milan really needs to make up their mind, and get a plan about what kind of team they want to build, and buy accordingly.
against tottenham, we all saw the problems they had against a decent opponent.

in my opinion, they should look back to the past and see where they build their succes.
that should be a 4-2-3-1 formation, a modern version of the 4-5-1 ancelotti used.

their defence is capabale, use zlatan as lone, complete striker, use cassano as trequartista, use pato and robinho as inside forwards.
use pirlo as deeplying playmaker next to an awsome destroyer
all they should have bought over the summer, was a very good athletic DM.
van bommel, flamini, gattuso, all to old and slow.

really, one good DM and pirlo would have made them so much better, but they mistaken it.
and italy is going for a horrific european year
