Andrea Pirlo believes the penalty incident was ‘dubious’ after defeat to Napoli. ‘Some incidents are treated differently when against Juventus.’

The Bianconeri suffered their second Serie A defeat of 2021, after falling to Inter, it was another big game at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Lorenzo Insigne missed a penalty against Juve in the Supercoppa last month, but this time he converted into the roof of the net following Giorgio Chiellini’s flailing arm in Amir Rrahmani’s face.

“We never had a shot on goal, we lost due to a dubious incident, but it’s a pity we didn’t get the win. We put in the performance that we needed to, but not the result that we deserved,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We moved the ball around, but not quickly enough, so Napoli were able to get into position. In the second half we were more enterprising, created more chances, but didn’t get the goal.”

Pirlo was asked why he considered the penalty incident to be ‘dubious’ for Chiellini flailing an arm in the face of Rrahmani.

“If you give a penalty for that, then any contact will be punishable by a spot-kick. If that had been given for us, there would’ve been a lot of controversy and complaints, assuming it’d be given to us at all.

“I am just saying the incidents went that way today. It was a dubious penalty, a doubt over the double yellow card for Giovanni Di Lorenzo. Some incidents are treated differently when against Juventus, because everyone talks about us. Sometimes that tactic works, sometimes it doesn’t. Never mind.

“It’s natural when playing this many games that we lack a bit of sharpness, but it was a good performance and the only thing we were missing was a goal.

“There’s no guarantee the team that scores the most goals then wins the Scudetto. We create plenty of chances, the Napoli goalkeeper was Man of the Match, so I can’t complain about my strikers today.

“We could be 10 points off the top with a game in hand, but it’s still only February and if we keep playing at this level, we’ll do well.

“If we put in this type of performance and score goals, then I am sure we’ll get the results we want.”

Considering how important this result was for his old friend Rino Gattuso, is Pirlo at least somewhat torn?

“I’m pleased for Gattuso because he’s a friend, but I preferred to win and take the three points home.”
Mister don't go down the sarri and Conte road.

Take Max as an example .

I like how we rejuvenated our squad in the summer, but was annoyed that we didn’t sign a creative force in midfield. We really need to sign one of Aouar, Locatelli and Pogba otherwise we are screwed.
We actually have 2 starters in mckennie and arthur . We just need a 3rd . Aourar and locatteli would be great ,if pogab's asking price is too much.
Sadly I don't see us getting 2 if we are unable to get rid of a lot of dead weight.

We still have rugano, de sciglio, turdeski , costa ,pjaca, sadly.

The guys moved the ball well and controlled the game. We did no wrong in defense but that Chiellini`s stupid slap.
The problem is that we are not dangerous enough.

Mediocre performance and an extremely disappointing result but we weren't as bad as some here have said. This was the sort of game we used to win under Allegri we just didn't tonight. Chances to score were there but we didn't take them.

Felt like that belief and bite, maybe experience throughout the squad too, that used to get us through these kinds of games has been lacking this season. As painful to watch as players like khedira, pjanic, matuidi could be they were able to win Serie A games like these

All we have is a bunch of DMs we keep playing as mids except maybe Artur but he is underperforming too and it's not clear why. Maybe if he stays deep by the CBs to take the pressure off them (specially with bonucci out) and also they can protect him while he sprays the ball around like Pirlo used to do..then again that was Pirlo. Idk this fuking mid roster is neither technical nor hard enough to take advantage of either quality.
Not saying this loss is necessarily on Pirlo but i disagree with this whole style, wtf is the point of moving the ball quick if you are going to stall in the last third and play backpasses..
So then just play counter attack 101..do what we do best defend and wait for the moment..shit we got THE fukn players for that, nobody does that better than morata/CR..if there's no playmaker to open defenses with our current style, then let's leave some space in front for these two to explore.
To play this style we are now with shit mids is not optimal.

- he plays with 2 cm's like his life depends on it
- we still suck whatever he tries
- he finally makes a change and starts to play 3 cm's
- we start to get results and continuity
- switches back to 2 cm's

Valid point...understanding we have limited midfielders but yeah we dont look good with 2 cms.

Missed match but disappointed in Pirlo starting a MF with Bent, Rab and Berna in it. How the fuk did Berna get to start? Were there injuries or suspensions that these 3 were starters?

Our mid needs healthy arthur and wes and then have to hope one of ben10 and ramsey has a good day. Mid will be inconsistent with arthur out. With him out, i think bonucci's passing is required. Will make small diff from back. They looked like headless chickens today.

Add chiesa for counterattacks and even panita cuadra runs from deep.

Then he needs to stop playing players that can't perform in any kind of match, let alone a big game match.
We don't have many choices available
Inter-roma-inter-napoli-porto are big match consecutively play every 3/4 days
We can't risk playing our best line up in every match
As much as i hate berna starts, i try to look over the possible reason for his line-up choice. I understand that it would be too risky to play non experience fagioli or anyone from u-23 to play big match. Yes the output isn't good. But it's understandable.
On the other hand, the reason why weston benched maybe because we only have him besides benta-rabiot in mid as senior squad until next month. We have to manage players fitness wisely.

After porto match, maybe we can try to give fagioli or other u-23 mid some minutes. From that we can evaluate if they deserve a starting in serie A match or not.

He is right that we deserved more from the game. Napoli had no intention of going forward this match, they parked the bus in a way teams like Benevento would. But penalty incident isnt dubious if we go by current rules. In some other era, this would have never been a penalty, just like Ashley Young's challenge on Cuadrado wouldnt have been called because the ball was out of reach since Bernadeschi completely messed up the cross. I dont recall him mentioning the incident then.

His post match interview says it all really. Not only is he completely clueless on the bench, but his comments about the referee and the penalty is just retarded.

Not more risky than playing traffic cone Bernie, who offers absolutely nothing. At least Fagioli brings some unpredictability in the offensive department. Playing a two man midfield with Bernie on the wing against any team, let alone Napoli away shows Pirlo has learned nothing.
