Always one of my favourite players, even at Milan (and even when he scored twice against Scotland...) so I was delighted when we signed him.
One of the main reasons for our rise back to the top, that first season it seemed like other players couldn't even get near him. We had a solid, hard-working team, with Pirlo just gliding around, making things happen.
So many times in the last four years, he'd decide a match with one moment of brilliance, whether it was a free-kick, or a perfect pass.
The way he could buy himself space and time, the way he held off that exact fraction of a second needed to play a pass, the weight he could put on them - poetry in motion.
To see him cry after that Champions League final was like a kick in the heart, and I'm genuinely gutted that he'll never get to lift that trophy in Bianconero, it's what he deserved.
The kind of player you'll be telling your grandchildren about, class personified.
