Well, it is in a way. Scholes is retired, Pirlo and Xavi are to retire in a couple of years. Verratti and Thiago are the only two youngsters who show a lot of promise as a regista and can reach Pirlo's level at some point in their career. And one of them will probably go back to his old Trequartista position.

Nowadays a Regista is just as rare as the idea of having a 2-attackers formation. Very few teams in Europe still use it and that includes us, PSG and Atl. Madrid. Those are dying things in football.

It's just that not many teams play with a regista anymore. Just like there's no more sweepers left. You don't think there's players out there who can do a great job in that position? You're forgetting something important here... Being a regista is not only about the position one can play, it's about being the one that dictates the flow of the match, the one to have a team built around him, being the main target from teammates when looking for offensive plays. When you take that into consideration you'll see the names you mentioned are far from that, with the exception of maybe Sahin (And Modric, but he didn't really impress me at Madrid. Liked him better as a CM/AM at Tottenham). Oh and btw Schweinsteiger is a box-to-box mid. Gundogan is a top player but don't know if he'd be able to fit Pirlo's role.

You're forgetting something important here... Being a regista is not only about the position one can play, it's about being the one that dictates the flow of the match, the one to have a team built around him, being the main target from teammates when looking for offensive plays. When you take that into consideration you'll see the names you mentioned are far from that, with the exception of maybe Sahin (And Modric, but he didn't really impress me at Madrid. Players like Schweinsteiger and Gundogan are perfect examples of hybrid B2B/DLP. They can pick up the fall from their own D, start attacks, go up the pitch to the opponents D and press. They are friggin' dynamic unlike their Italian counterparts.

A good Pirlo replacement would be Matic from Benfica imo.
