Scholes (in his prime) was as good as Pirlo, and I'm not saying that because I'm a United fan, but because I'm a football fan and I know a great player when I see him. I don't want to turn this thread into Scholes vs Pirlo, but anyone who says that Scholes is not near the level of Pirlo is either insane or extremely biased towards Pirlo.
The fact that Scholes was United's best player in 2012 speaks for itself, the man is the main reason United finished with as much points as City.

Btw a lot of you on here where against Pirlo joining Juve and labelled him as finished. And I bet half of you didn't rate Pirlo this highly when he was a playing in red and black.

As for replacing Pirlo, as long as Pirlo has fire in him and desire to play you don't have to worry about replacing him for at least 3-4 years. I see no reason why Pirlo can't play till he's 37.
Pirlo's game was never about his pace, and you don't lose your vision, tactical discipline and football intelligence.

Well, Is not about his pace....which is obviously not his main attribute and it doesnt matter anyways.....
What can really affect him is his stamina. In the first 3 euro games, he was clearly wasted by minute 75.

Now, imagine him playing at that temp at 35 or 36.....
He will clearly burn out. So we better find a replacement now, or start thinking about changing formations in a couple years.

Samir Nasri: "Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him.”

Xabi Alonso
: “Fans in Spain rate him very highly and I admire him a huge amount. To me Paul is a role model. He is the best midfielder I’ve seen in the last 15 or 20 years.”

Gerard Pique
: “One of the best players I’ve ever seen in my life! Spectacular on training!! Playing with him was a joy!”

Ronaldinho: "I want to pass like him. Who taught him how to do that?”

Fabregas: “He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.”

Shevchenko: “They have two of the world’s best young players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but the player who most impresses me is Paul Scholes. He is United’s most important player, he makes most things happen on the field.”

Luis Figo
: “I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.”

Pep Guardiola:"He is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.”

Patrick Vieira
: “The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes”

Gudjohnsen “Scholes is one of the most complete footballers I’ve ever seen. His one-touch play is phenomenal. Whenever I have played against him, I never felt I could get close to him.”

Henry: “I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other 'stars’.”

Xavi: “In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.”

And I'll leave you with those three quotes from people who you might know:

Edgar Davids: “Every one of us is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes”

Lippi: “Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team.”

Zidane: "My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get."

Pirlo have been working very hard with Italy, he's running and moving a lot, doing a lot of interceptions and tackles. With Juve, Pirlo can be deployed even deeper, with Marchisio, Asamoah and Vidal doing the dirty work.

I can't think of many who can replace Pirlo, Xabi Alonso would be great, but he's almost 31. Thiago Alcântara has a great passing range, but I doubt Barca would ever sell him.
Borja Valero can replace Pirlo, his passing and movement is top class and he is young and wouldn't cost much. He's one of the most underrated players in Spain.

Well, as long as we have guys like vidal and marchisio destorying everything in his path and babysitting him, he will have a longer lifespan.... but right now, in italy the guy is simply giving his all. Lets hope this will not deplete his performance gaainst germany.... because right now everything goes thru him, and he is tackling everyone too.

I think he will be fine, I mean he still raped teams when he was injured and was using his left leg. He'll be fine. I worry more about guys like Barza, De Rossi & Cassano who will feel it a lot more imo.

Scholes fanboy?

I think both Pirlo and Scholes are great, I wouldnt pick one of them as better to another.

And you are posting this here why?
Because there is a lot of ignorance in this thread, and I'm fighting that ignorance.

How long will Pirlo play for Italy? I can't see him playing past this Euros. When Pirlo retires from Italy it will help his fitness a bit.

I'm worried how Pirlo will cope against Germany. Poor man played every minute of the group stage, and played 120 minutes against England. Hopefully he'll be fit enough to destroy the Germans. Pirlo and the defence are they key to beat Germany.

Scholes is as good as Pirlo, that's the point I was trying to make. I wouldn't pick between them and for me they are one of the best midfielders I ever witnessed in my life time. I posted that because some here were saying that Scholes is 'just' good and similar stuff.

It's an absolute joy to watch either of them play, not many can pass like they would pass.

Really, a Scholes vs Pirlo debate? That's really what we want on this Juventus forum. He hasn't played for England in ages, why are we even talking about this?

Surely when he said 'England wish they had someone like Pirlo' he didn't mean retired players.

This whole thing of comparing retired players to currently active players.. what could've been and what not, that's just not my thing really. It's just a Utd fan doing what they usually do.... on United forums.

I really dislike United.

I know, but the point was, if I understood correctly, that England don't have someone with his ability in their squad.

Ah, never mind, it's not like people are going to drop it anyway. :D

Who's retired? Last time I checked Scholes was still playing.

Well he retired from playing for England like 7 years ago because he didn't want to be there as far as I remember. I, however, don't know the details. So.. well.. England don't really have anyone in their squad with Pirlo's ability, do they? I'm not sure they would have if Scholes were there, although I think he's a great player. That's really beside the point though imo.

That's interesting though, didn't Scholes retire entirely though, after last season? I knew he came back after retiring once before, but I thought last was his last season. If he's still there for next season, I really didn't know that. :D

Pretty unfortunate that after the tournaments over, most of the world will turn their attention back to messi and ronaldo. Pirlo for ballon d'or
