Amauri will be Italian in September

Juventus striker Amauri will apparently receive an Italian passport in September, making him eligible for a call up to La Nazionale.

The 29-year-old was born in Brazil, but has lived in Italy for nine years and has an Italian wife.

Having never been selected for Brazil he decided to apply for Italian citizenship to increase his chances of international football.

Missing paperwork has considerably delayed the process, which has been ongoing for over 18 months.

“On the first of September I will have an Italian passport and this for me is already and honour, because I have lived here for 10 years and I am happy,” he said.

“Then, as Lippi has said, once I have the citizenship I can be taken into consideration.

“To play for Italy would be a way to pay this country back for all it has given me.”

Speaking in La Gazzetta dello Sport, Amauri then discussed his emotions after watching Brazil beat Italy 3-0 in the Confederations Cup.

“I didn't support either team. I supported football and who played well. Brazil won and entertained me,” he said.

“They are two prestigious nations and when they meet it's a guaranteed spectacle.”

When asked if the difference between Brazil and Italy is really as a great as the scoreline suggests, Amauri replied: “The results today say so.

“Hopefully within a year it will be different.

“Contrary to Italy, Brazil are in a great moment of form. All the players are well.

“With respect to Lippi, who is trying to introduce new players, Dunga has the advantage of having working with the same group for two years.

“Three years ago, Lippi won the World Cup with a team few believed in.

“He has the experience and is trying to carry forward certain ideas, because he knows that in the future they could bear fruit. Let him work, he knows his job,” Amauri explained.

The former Palermo striker then denied Italian football is poorer without Kaka.

“Serie A has lost Kaka, it's true, but it has contracted another champion like Diego, who compensates for the loss.

“Diego called me a lot in the days when he was closing a deal with Juventus. He wanted to know about the city, the team and the club.

“I advised him to come here with a sense of calm, because this is a very serious club, among the most prestigious in the world.

“I said to him: 'Torino is the right choice for you and we need your qualities.'” Amauri revealed.

Amauri drops Italy hint
Associated Press
Updated: June 23, 2009, 9:11 AM EDT

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Juventus striker Amauri has given the strongest indication yet that he is ready to commit his international future to Italy.

The Brazilian-born attacker will be eligible for Marcello Lippi's side from September and the World Cup winning coach is under pressure to introduce new blood into his team after a first-phase elimination from the Confederations Cup in South Africa.

"On the first of September I will have my Italian passport and this for me is an honor because I've happily lived here for 10 years," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"As the coach said, once I have Italian citizenship he will take me into consideration. I have said before that wearing the Azzurri shirt would be a way of repaying everything that this country has given me."

The 29 year-old, who scored 12 goals for Juventus last season, also reiterated his desire to remain with Juventus despite interest from AC Milan's new coach Leonardo.

"I have heard these rumors, Milan is another big club and it is pleasing to hear, but my future is with Juventus and I hope it is a winning future," Amauri said.

He's playing it smart, he'd prefer brazil but doesn't wanna rule out Italy as he wants international football. Lest we forget, he sang milan's praises until they didn't reach CL and he then made juve his 1st choice...which I was happy about!

Then he needs to watch more Bundesliga too because that's where Bayern Munchen plays, if you did not know.
