The origin of the name Mauro is actually Greek. Μαύρο (mavro) is the greek word for "black" and the Greeks were the ones who called the northern African tribes Mauri(si). The Romans took it from the Greeks and they called their african allies, later occupiers of parts of Italy, with the one name Mauri.
Then Mauro/Maura became a name, mostly in Italy.
