It's not that i'd hate it if we sign Barzagli, but i don't see him as an improvement in our defense.

If Barzagli was a great defender, a world class, he would have been head and sholders above everyone in Palermo. He would have been the one to organize and command their defense and he would have done it very well. But look at Palermo and their defense, watch Barzagli and notice how lost he looks sometimes.
Materazzi was such leader in Peruggia, even Legro was a leader in Chievo. Barzagli is not even close to this. He's not doing good in Palermo, how can we let him lead our defense then ?

People see him in the NT, people want an Italian defender and they're closing their eyes in front of the reality.
And the reality is that apart from Chiellini there isn't a single world class Italian defender younger than 30 and that apart from Materazzi, Nesta and Cannavaro Italians didn't have a single world class CB in 2006 and only that's the reason why Barzagli found himself with the azzuri.
Casiraghi talked about this problem few days ago. He praised Juve and Fiorentina for giving chances to the youngsters but he also said that he's having huge problems forming the defense for the u21 and how the problem lies in Italian football clubs that never give chances to the young Italian defenders and they go for foreigners instead. That's why there wasn't a single great Italian central defender between Nesta (generation 1976) and Chiellini (generation 1984), who still isn't great but is developing pretty well.

I don't want Juve to pick players only based on their nationality. There are a lot of central defenders who will surely be an improvement over Legrottaglie. Barzagli is not much, if any at all, better than Legro.
you do know that Barzaglis the captain of Palermo, right? and sure he may not be as active as Canna or as elegant as Nesta, but he gets the job done...so I say go for it, it would be a solid transfer...Chi and Barzagli would make a very solid CB partnership

I know and to me this has the same value as the fact that Davide Baiocco is the captain of Catania.
Palermo has the second worst defense in serie A and only Cagliari conceeded more goals then they did.
People found a very convinient excuse for this and they say it's because of their goalkeeper Fontana.
But the fact is that Fontana with 72 saves is the serie A keeper with most saves so far this year.
I guess we can locate the problem in the defense, not at GK position.
And who is supposed to lead the defense ? Barzagli ;)

That's the problem man. You say Barzagli gets the job done but the truth is he doesn't get the job done.

Trezeguet, Del Piero, Iaquinta, Palladino and Amauri then.

I hear some people talking about bench problems?

Well, Serie A + Coppa Italia + Champions League = 5 Attackers (Palladino can count as MIDFIELDER too) for 3 leagues? Not that mutch...

If you play in Juventus you have concurention, if you cant live with that, than find another squad, Catania or Cagliari :).

Barzagli has sucked every time he has played against us... doesn't that tell you something? Or do we have to spell it out for you?

@ Ahmed

I have to ask..this insistence on Barzagli..is it based on Palermo matches you watched?? or are you just assuming he is world class because he plays for the Italian NT??

Amauri plans Palermo exit Sunday 30 December, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brazilian striker Amauri has confirmed that he expects to leave Palermo at the end of the current campaign.

The Rosanero hitman, currently in his second season at the Renzo Barbera, has been linked with both Juventus and Milan – and he isn’t fussy about which giant he joins.

“I would like to play with Alex Del Piero and David Trezeguet, but it would also be great to play with Kakà too,” he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I would be honoured to play for both teams, so we will have to see who gets me first…

“My main target at the moment is to qualify for the Champions League with Palermo, because I owe them a lot. I think we can do it.”

The Brazilian has also confessed that he could follow in Mauro Camoranesi’s footsteps by taking on Italian nationality.

“Something could happen in 2008, either Brazil or Italy could call me. It would be a dream to play for either and it was a pleasure to read about Dunga and Roberto Donadoni’s praise.”

Regarding Amauri’s exit, Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has announced that Juventus are in pole position for the 27-year-old striker.

“The Bianconeri are the only club who could offer me an adequate player exchange, even though I’m not selling anyone for the time being,” he stated.

“Milan don’t have to call me as their Vice-President Adriano Galliani is the last person I would sell Amauri to.”

THose stats alone conclude everything.. He isnt all that and like you said in the post above.. He was chosen to the Azzuri cuz there wasent much to pick from... We can find much better defenders at his price...

oh man, I backtracked on my earlier opinions of him and picked him in the poll based on the scotland game and the idea of an Italian back CB pairing. I have to say you guy's arguments against are pretty damning and I have not seen any Palermo games.

sight devil's advocate though, has he not been ready to leave Palermo for some years? maybe he is sucking extra hard because he has not been given the step up at club level he was ready for..?

Lack of motivation due to a disappointment could be the reason, or one of the reasons, for his bad performances. Something similar to what was happening to Trez and Camo in serie B.

But there is a difference between Trez and Camo on one side, guys who won and achieved everything and were suddenly forced to play provincial football. Guys who had their best years and best contracts behind them, and Barzagli on the other side, a guy who is yet to prove himself, who is still playing top league football and who is yet to sign his best contract.
By playing bad he can lose much more than he can gain. He's risking to lose his spot with the Azzuri, he'll be offered a contract with much worse financial details compared to what he could have gotten if he played well and at the end, he's risking a call from his agent where he'll be told that no big clubs are interested in buying him. He's not showing any character and he's showing lack of ambition if disappointment for not been given a chance to play for the best clubs is the reason why he sucks hard.

Motivation may very well be one of the reasons for his average form and performances, but it's far from being the decisive one, imo.

Guys do something before we lose him too like Banega:

Su Amauri anche il Barcellona
01.01.2008 11.37 di Redazione TMW Contatta Redazione TMW articolo letto 534 volte
Fonte: Sportitalia
