Zaza is worth €18m in todays market and yet we've only paid a total €10m for him. That's good business. Marottas dealings with Sassuolo is quite opaque so we don't know whats really in this. Berardi has a fixed buyback clause, we've got first hand rights on Vrsaljko etc etc.. Who knows..

This Zaza deal has been negotiated back and forth for years already - when we sell them Berardi for €12m (can't remember exactly) it's not Marotta valuing Berardi at €12m, it's a way of justifying us buying him for €20m next summer..
That's the thing, we payed 18m for him. We will sell players every year, replace them, but won't use recieved fee from sales to decrease fee payed for newly arrived players. Two seperate deals and we had benefits last season from that money. You can't use money recieved last year (spent for other purposes) and then again this year to decrease the fee. Makes no sense.

His value might as well be 18m, but is he necessary signing for us? Not so long ago people argued with me when I wanted Radja as a backup mid and he'd be 1st/2nd sub coming off the bench, price was around 15m and that is a quality midfielder, but now signing 4th/5th striker for moderate fee makes sense. I'm not gonna keep harping about this deal and I let it go, hope he has a killer season.

Before he joined Roma? I wanted him too, but with Vidal there was no real need. If he was still at Cagliari he would have been here as the Vidal replacement quicker than a fat person hits a buffet.

This is where I disagree. We had Vidal, Pirlo, Marchisio and Pogba for the middle, Asamoah was playing as a WB and was never really considered for the CM spot. Padoin is sort of a wild card, but he isn't a type of player that you could rely on in the long term, for this spot. Can feature occasionaly, odd minutes now and then, but CM he clearly isn't. We lacked rotational options in the middle, starting midfielders were overused and it was most evident in our European games. As far as I recall it mgt tried in the last few days of mercato in 2013 to find terms with Cagliari, but in vein and the negotiations were supposed to continue in January. By then Juve went out of CL and we didn't have need for Radja anymore for that season. Having in mind Pirlo's years and that he signed contract extension rather late in the season if we went for Radja I doubt Pirlo would get 2 year extension.

I still think it would have been a little overkill, and the main issue would have been the reduced time for Nainggolan on the field. His direct competitor was Vidal, then the two stalwarts Marchisio and Pirlo in the other CM positions, plus a wonderkid in Pogba. It's the same reason why we ducked on Kondogbia, and more recently Allan (Khedira incoming).

I don't agree on us giving up on Pirlo any earlier, only perhaps in that first Allegri season, and Nainggolan would least contest directly with him.
