You get them to agree to lower the price of their player in exchange for a couple of ours that don't really cost us anything at all...perhaps ones that come thru our academy.. Give them F. Rossi and Immobile that cost us nothing at all ever and have them bring the price of Matri down from 16m to 11-12m and we save money...
it isn't rocket science.
There are different scenarios here Buck.
It shouldn't be, but I'm beginning to think it is.
Regardless of which players you insert in the deal, and whether our not they cost us something in the past (every single one has, even the so called "free" ones or former youth players), as long as they're under contract with us, they have a certain value. And if you get rid of one of these players, you also no longer have that "value" in your books, but you obviously get something in return ideally (be that money or another player).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against using players we have no use for in these deals. Far from it, at times you can really pull off some great deals (even if the smaller clubs usually have the advantages over the bigger ones, since the bigger ones are mostly the initiating parties).
But simply using this tactic does not bring the price down. And this is not even an opinion, it's a simple fact. And my earlier, hypothetical example proves just that.
The only way you could talk about bringing the price down (if we continue with Ekdal as an example) would be if we value him at 4m & Cagliari agrees to a deal that would see us paying less than 14 + Ekdal. And even then, it's still debatable since we are estimating Ekdal's value, while Matri's was, apparently, already agreed. But, as mentioned earlier, since we are the initiating party, chances are that whatever player of ours Cagliari is willing to take, will be valued higher by us than by them.
But yes, I would consider keeping an in form Iaquinta as a smart move as well
