If Motta wants him, then it is what it is.

He hasn't been the issue the last few years
He has been, besides the fraud, one of the biggest issues of our terrible attacking phase.
I can't even explain the amount of missed attack plays because of him being too slow, unbothered to make run, to make two more steps and make himself available for pass, blind to see forward pass and instead play it backwards and numerous other lazy ass issues.

Only possible position for him would be in front of defence to only be allowed to go forward on set pieces.

Makes sense - a meme club needs a meme captain  :howler: :b81:

7+ million for a dude with 22 goals and 18 assists over 5 seasons. That's an average of 4.4 goals and 3.6 assists per season. If that's worth 7+ million a season, I wonder what salary someone like Barella, Camvinga or Rodri should be getting.

For reference, the much maligned McNuggets has 10 assists this season alone. Should we also offer him 7 million a year? At least he runs, has an engine and isn't a total Fag like this Benign Baguette.

Probably because of his total cost, if the club brought someone for 20 million on a 4 million net salary the amortization would make them both “cost” about the same on a yearly basis. And 20 million/4 million salary players are not more than rotation options.
True, we'd need at least 40m to buy a mid starter, so in short term its more expensive. However in long term I'd argue its the more sensible move economically - a disproportionate wage for Rabiot will affect our contract negotiations with other players and after 3 years we'll be at the same point. However if we sign someone younger on a 5 year contract, after 3 years we either extend on our terms or sell.

Sure, I would not keep Rabiot for anything over 4M salary, the problem is there are a few positions that need to be upgraded so extending with Rabiot allows the club just that - get a new midfielder and CB and hopefully some other reinforcements now and either hope Locatelli, Rabiot and Fagioli perform with Motta or replace them in the future.

I don't have a strong view on Rabiot but I think he is our best midfielder to be honest - at least that was the case last year (Fagioli was suspended for most of it so who knows).

Just remember. IF Rabiot was on a contract somewhere else, even at the age of 29, his contract would be worth 30-40m and his salary would be around 5m. So for reference, Koopmeiners would cost 45m (on a 4 or 5 year contract) and come with a 4-5m in net salary - that costs the P&L ~19-20m per year. Rabiot just costs 14m. I know they are very different types of midfielders but you can see the rationale. And we no longer need to pay amortization on Rabiot's contract when he was purchased too.
