You're not smarter than the others because you're atheist. You are atheist because you are smarter than the others.
exactly, which is why it is so hard for me to pay attention to anything a religious person says
If that makes you guys sleep at night then go for it. However, anyone who has blind faith anything, be it atheism or theism should deservedly be called an idiot. It's not the belief or idea you posess that measures your intelligence, it is the nature in which you express your thoughts and arguments,: it is your openness to the subject itself that measures your intelligence.

The only thing worse than a closed minded theist is a closed minded atheist. Labelling believers as idiots and atheists as intelligent people is just as absurd as labelling a certain race, culture, sex as smart or stupid.

    Umh, yes it is.

The only thing worse than a closed minded theist is a closed minded atheist.
    Lol how is it worse?

    Well played Ze :D
    I enjoyed Andy's and Bianconero's reactions.

    No hard feelings, guys.
Credit goes to you for starting it :D

I must take this time to commend Andy for keeping his composure somewhat, this could have been an absolutely classic if you had exploded like we were hoping you would :D

This is true. They're just as bad as the religious fanatics. I can't stand both of them.

One learns by asking questions, many questions. By being curious, exploring and reading a lot.
I refuse to accept without a question when someone tells me "God exists" or when someone claims that God doesn't exist. There are millions and millions who accepted that as a fact, without bothering to ask "Why?" "How do we know this?" etc.

But most of those who asked the questions, who keep asking questions, who keep reading, who are familiar with the history of religion and world's history....are closer to atheism than theism.
I wholeheartedly agree, Although your last statement is very debatable, many can easilly go the other way. I can give you examples of countless physicists that have converted from atheism to theism. I think it's a weak argument in any case as spiritual matters depend soley on the individual.

No, it really isn't. Consider this situation. Imagine socialism was the ideal solution for today's economy. Now consider two people, John and Chris. Chris had socialism shoved down his throat by parents, culture, friends etc.. Despite the fact that he hadn't a clue about what socialism stood for, he believed in it.

Now John is a harvard professor and has been lecturing about Socialism for years. He knows it inside out, he has flawless arguments and more often than not, knows exactly what he's talking about.

Now, according to you, the belief in itself is sufficient to define one's intelligence when it is clearly not the case here. This can easilly apply to theism and atheism.

Other than being closed minded, atheists generally posess an uncanny amount of ego and arrogance. They believe that they are truly superior than the rest. This type of arrogance quite accurately defines stupidity.Whereas theists, despite being closed minded fanatics, still posess some humility. To sum it up, I'd rather hang around with the latter if I wanted to have a good time.

    You said this:

It's not the belief or idea you posess that defines your intelligence, it is the nature in which you express, it is your openness to the subject that defines your intelligence.
Which I say is false, because it's precisely the convictions you have that reflect your intelligence. In order to believe in something you need to justify it to yourself, and the form that justification takes is a measure of how intelligent you are. The form in which you express the idea is completely marginal.

Other than being closed minded, atheists generally posess an uncanny amount of ego and arrogance. They believe that they are truly superior than the rest. This type of arrogance quite accurately defines stupidity.Whereas theists, despite being closed minded fanatics, they still posess some humility. So the only thing worse than a close minded theist is a close minded atheist.. in terms of good company? Fair enough. On the whole though, I don't see a difference.

Exactly. I might have used the wrong word. I meant that it is our convictions that define our intelligence and not the idea itself, which would make what the argument of "Atheists are cleaver while theists are smart" useless.

A closed minded person will always be annoying, regardless which side he/she is on. However, it is simply out of experience and I may be wrong here that atheists often tend to be more mocking, provocative, spiteful, unpleasant more often than not. That is only why I said they would be worse.
