I went to the game last night. Some thoughts:
We certainly didn't win any new fans in Hamburg yesterday. We all knew that Ranieri would play a completely different team. German newspapers, though, had reported that Juve would earn 120.000 Euro for this game and agreed to play their very best team. Therefore lots of people were disappointed not see famous players like Buffon, Camoranesi, Trezeguet or Nedved (only a couple of minutes). Many people probably only knew Del Piero and Brazzo (he not only played many years in Bundesliga for Bayern, but started his professional career in Hamburg). So the "big match feeling" was not really there.
Our game style didn't help either. Playing with three defensive midfielders and Brazzo (strangely he played on the left) who is more a hard worker than a creative genius didn't make for beautiful football. As we were totally dominated in the first 20 minutes we were fouling, hacking them down and complaining a lot. We received 2 yellow cards (Brazzo and Criscito) and lots of boos in the opening 15 minutes (and rightly so). Brazzo would have been sent off after 30 minutes in a real match.
Our midfield was literally impotent and didn't create any chance. Lots of bad passes and long balls. We were only half dangerous on the counter attack when Del Piero had the ball or with set pieces for Boumsong. Del Piero looked out of shape and was very slow. His vision, his ability to use his body and his touch for the ball were outstanding though. There was a scene where Del Piero received a long ball and was easily overtaken by two Hamburg defenders. One old drunken bastard in front of me yelled "He is an old man, he can't do it anymore". Then DP somehow sneaked through these defenders for a good shot opportunity. "Oh my god, the old man can still do it!". I laughed hard. He really doesn't look good when running, but he still can do alot with the ball and was very dangerous. He missed two great freekick chances though in his prefered zone. One was decent but saved by the keeper, the other one was really bad and I could have saved that with my hands on my back.
I was surprised by Boumsong. After DP he was the most dangerous player of our team (not in an ironic way!). Every half decent corner that reached him was dangerous. He had one mistake where the ball slipped under his feet, but fortunately no Hamburg striker was nearby. The rest of the game he was very solid. Unbeatable with headers, with the right form of determination and aggression. With the one exception mentioned above he didn't look shaky at all. I hope he continues that way. I have a soft spot for him.
Hamburg absolutely dominated the first 30 minutes and could have easily scored. Later we were able to compete more, but Hamburg still with better chances. They changed almost the whole team at half time and we were slightly better than them at the beginning of the second half. They created some good scoring opportunities though and absolutely deserved to win. Overall considering the formation and the fact that they were clearly fitter than us we weren't that bad.
Some thoughts to each player:
Belardi: Some great saves, shaky at corners and crosses though - 6,5
Criscito: Solid in defense, some bad passes going forward - 5,5
Boumsong: Solid at the back, dangerous upfront - 6,5
Legro: Nothing bad, nothing good - 5
Birindelli: Same as Legro - 5
Nocerino: a beast. He has to calm down and didn't do much upfront though 5,5
Zanetti: I expected more of him. Did his job at defending, didn't do anything for our attacks - 5,5
Brazzo: Useless, overmotivated, lots of fouls, nothing upfront. He needs someone who opens up spaces for him - 5
Blasi: Invisble in the first half. Some nice runs in the second half - 5,5
Palladino: He ran a lot and was trying, but didn't receive any half descent assists. 5,5
Del Piero: See text above - 6,5
Almiron: We were missing a player like him. He had not much time to show something though - 5,5
Nedved/Iaquinta only played a couple of minutes.
Jeez, my text sounds negative, but overall it was a nice experience. I was really nervous. although it was just a friendly. I'm really looking forward to a competetive match and I hope to meet more Juventus fans there.
Anyone not fallen asleep till here?
Thanks for reading!
