I wouldn't really count free transfers. We could sign random Bosmon players, keep them for a year, and sell them for peanuts and call it profit. It doesn't take a master of the market to take advantage of that arbitrage opportunity.

And anyway, we should add a premium to some players who did more harm than good in the team when they played, accounting for the opportunity cost of not fielding somebody better. Marchionni and Nocerino come to mind here.

European champions Barcelona are looking to Italy for a new right-back, according to Spanish sources.

Boss Pep Guardiola is wanting some defensive re-enforcements ahead of the new campaign and two Serie A players in particular have caught his eye.

The first is Juventus’ Zdenek Grygera, a Czech international who has been in Turin since his 2007 Bosman move from Ajax.

Grygera has been associated with a move away from Turin all summer and Juve are ready to sell if the price is right.

Barca’s other option is the more attacking Cicinho who already has Liga experience following his two-year spell at Real Madrid.

Signed for a fee of around £8m by Roma in the summer of 2007, the Brazilian international has struggled for form and fitness ever since.
