The best thing about Eruption is its name, I agree, it's an overrated song. Hell it's not even a song FFS, it's a show-off; "Ooh, look how well I play the guitar, I can keep this solo going for hours". A number of top guitar players can do that shit. A song must have structure, that's when a solo has that WOW effect. A good solo must be incorporated into that structure, it needs to be the climax of an actual song, not just a jamming session. I'd take the 15 second solo from Whole Lotta Love over Eruption anyday, it's more brilliant in every possible way.

I'm not trying to diss Eddie, he's a great, but Eruption is not all that.

Supposedly, Petrucci has the best technique out of them all. But technique is not everything.

I'm not familiar with John Williams as a soloist, but now you mention it, there are a lot of classical guitarists who would make even the best rock guitarists feel embarrassed.

Now Syd is someone really overrated IMO.

My current favourite is probably Peter Green. The stuff he did with the original Fleetwood Mac is brilliant, too bad he ended up a junkie.

personally i love the base in fleetwood mac's "the chain" such a great song
and the guy from arctic monkeys drumming (especially the kick arse start) in "the view from the afternoon" is pure quality

but for an all-round show stopper i have to go with all the elements of queens of the stone age's "no-one knows"
