they played the poli game as well and in both games we struggled to bring balls out of the midfield... mostly relying on the forwards dropping deep to get the ball
Actually you can ignore my reply as I did not see any of the friendly games we played. But I won't doubt what you saw, we had the same problem last year as well and it is not a simple problem to recover from.

I am gonna be controversial (ooh what a surprise) by dropping Nedved and Trez to the bench
Not that controversial at all to be honest, that idea has been proposed pretty often on this forum.

The special thing is that he wanted to test Nedved in front of the defenders.

if there were more room in bench I would add Del piero and not mutu, don't know I don't like him, maybe he would change my mind if he plays good ;)

    chimenti for buffon
    birindelli for zebina or zambo
    kovac for thuram or cnavaro
tudor for thuram or canavaro or emerson or vieira
    olivera camo/nedved/zlatan
blasi zebina or zambo oremerosn or vieria

    Buffon

    Thuram - Kovac - Cannavaro

    Camoranesi - Emerson - Vieira - Zambrotta

    Ibrahimovic - Trezeguet - Mutu

Not as outlandish as some of the formations in this thread, however I would run something like this if I was the coach.

This is basically a 3-4-3 that will sometimes shift into a 4-3-3 depending on the situation. We would start out with three at the back, a solid group of some of the better defenders in the world. In this formation Zambrotta would have free roam on the left flank, given special orders by me to watch his positioning on defense, and if we are ahead I would restrict his forward runs a bit. The trident in attack would be given freedom to do whatever they want, however I would expect Mutu to drop deeper back into midfield to pickup the ball.

This formation covers all areas rather well, especially causing trouble for the opposition's defense with pressue from the wings and middle of the pitch. Emerson and Vieira would shield the defense, and Thuram would basically turn himself into a RB. As you can see this formation can easily adapt to it's enviornment and can take many shapes or forms.

    ------------------ Trez ----------------
    ---- DP -------------------- Mutu ------

    --- Zambro ------ Vieira ------ Camo ---

    ---------------- Nedved ---------------

    ------ Kovac ---- Canna ---- Thuram -----

    ------------------ Gigi -------------------
A diamond in midfield with only three at the back? Why don't we just open up a swiss cheese factory?

    Andy's formation:

I'm not so sure about giving Kovac the central role in defense. Even if he is flanked by Cannavaro and Thuram, I'd prefer somebody else take up that mantle (when i say somebody else, i dont mean from our current options either). I like the 3-4-3, because it seemingly warrants Zambrotta a starting role on up on the left flank instead of defense, and like you said, we could switch it as and when required. However I'd rather see a more conventional 4-4-2 instead of 4-3-3, in which case Zambrotta and Mutu would fall back a notch and take up roles in defense and on the left wing respectively.

Its not in any way a diamond... Nor does it in reality have 3 at the back

Also... check through your history books to see a virtually identical formation (using a similarly aging attacking workhorse at the back) used in serie a, producing the best def and attack on its way to title glory....

But yeah your right... it could never work
