Cannabis is a name for substances that contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol); thus the name. A plant that is called marijuana contains this substance, the plant's flowers (or buds) can be smoked after they have been dried, the leaves and stems can be made into fabric. The plant has many street names, one of them is grass (I guess this is where your confusion comes from)

Hashish is gum-like substance that is made from marijuana plants. It takes the shape it takes after a certain process. I will not go into details of the process, different hashish (or simply hash) producers use different techniques to get to the end product. Coincidently, hashish means grass in Arabic and I guess this is where Eddy's confusion comes from.

About the article we have, the marijuana plants the soldiers were talking about are not to be dried and smoked, they are processed to become hash called Black Afghani, also known as Scorpion.
