Liverpool have persuaded Juventus to part with £16 million for out-of-favour midfielder Xabi Alonso, which means that Benitez can now increase his offer to Aston Villa for Gareth Barry.

Juventus originally offered £12 million for the Spanish international, who is with Spain for the Euro2008 tournament at the moment.

Rafael Benitez will be overjoyed that with the extra money received he can up the bid for Barry, who wants at least £15 million for his star player by Martin O'Neill, and has refused to to negotiate. Even then he will leave the final decision to Barry.

Barry is with the England team in Trinidad for a friendly, where he has been named captain.

The thing is that we NEED that position and I think Xabi is worth it.

Sissoko is destroyer and we need someone with good passing and it's hard to find someone better then Xabi.

Do you know what are you talking about? Zanetti is not better than Xabi, nor younger. Sissoko is a destroyer while Xabi is more a central midfielder. And Tiago will probably be sold.

I never liked Crouch, but he is so difficult player to play against, and almost always scores..Still would never want him at juve.
Xabi is the one we need.

Well he should since our staff said like 10 times that he's returning.

But I wouldn't be surprise if we lose him.Sadly,I think our staff is stupid enough to include him in swap deal for Stendardo.That way we could get Cigarini though.
