This world cup is lining up for an über-boring final. Germany, Portugal, Italy... If it's any worse than the Juventus-Milan CL final of 2003, the nations involved should be eternally banned from taking part in major tournaments.
England is definitely not the team that will add excitement though.

    Get a tissue, Erik. :p

Man, Ricardo came up monstrous in this match.

Hats off to England -- they really gutted it out and played a never-say-die match despite Rooney once again going off the handle and jeopardizing his team again. Portugal really should have put away their chances, Deco or no Deco, and England ensured they failed to make anything too threatening.

A tough match where you have to choose one winner, and I'm just glad it was Portugal. :strong:

    Força Portugal!

Even with a depleted Portugal squad, Scolari proves that Eriksson just ain't gonna cut it against him. :D

    Thankyou Portugal.

I was really expecting more from England, but they've been a bore to watch (and that coming from an Italian) Sorry to the English fans here, your country deserves better.

to be honest i cant understand why ricardo doesnt play for some big football club, big european club. sporting is not a european powerhouse imo
It's a good question. The problem is Ricardo is notorious for making the awful flub too. Think Oliver Kahn on his worst days... ball-between-his-legs, a mistimed bounce off the pitch in front of him, etc. Ricardo has shown big in big tournaments internationally, but he's also capable of complete laughers in league play.

Ricardo was definitely my MOM. But if I had to make a second choice, I would honestly have to consider Fernando Meira as a runner up. He didn't do anything special nor spectacular, but he's been the weakest link in Portugal's defense -- attempting to sub in for Jorge Andrade and his broken leg. I've had major doubts about him all tournament long. But today, he was effective and smart in covering Rooney. Clean play and stepped up really big, which is often the best you can hope for an otherwise questionable sub.

...though then again, Nuno Valente had a pretty monstrous stop that was just a hair's breadth from a mistimed tackle leading to a penalty in covering Lennon in the box.

i saw this list of 3 of the greatest world cup games of all times quite some time back.it had two italy-brazil matches.the one in 1970,and the 1982 one.but i dont remember the 3rd match.

has anyone else seen/heard of this list?

the argentina-germany final from 1986 could be the 3rd game on the list, but i cant recall correctly.the portugal-north korea one from 1966 is a possible contender too.

i remember when i had a conversation about best midfields in some other forum. and well some said england is up there, but clearly gerrard-lampard both on the pitch doesnt work. and if you dont have makelele it doesnt work at all :D

Its a difficult problem for the coach though, because lamp/gerrard both are class players so logically you start with both of them, but i have to say, already in the qualification games for wc, it wasnt good.

I think if england would have one of them, they would do well, but ofcourse it seems like total stupidity to bench one of them, but well coach has to have balls, ericson probably doesnt.

you got to be wrong there with 1970; italy-west germany 4-3 is one of the best games

70 brazil-italy wasnt something special, italy was tired after match with germany.

    1970:
The semi-final between Italy and West Germany went beyond history and into the legend as arguably the greatest game ever. Italy took a 1-0 lead through Roberto Boninsegna on 8 minutes after an excellent "one-two" combination with Luigi Riva. West Germany pressed to equalize for the rest of the game, until the very end when sweeper Karl-Heinz Schnellinger, then with Italy's AC Milan, scored in injury time. In extra time, Gerd Müller brought Germany the lead on 94 minutes before Italy defender Tarcisio Burgnich levelled the score with a rare international goal. On 104 minutes, Luigi Riva made it 3-2 past 'keeper Sepp Maier, only for Müller to equalize six minutes later. The TV cameras were still replaying this goal when Italy midfielder Gianni Rivera, left unmarked near the penalty spot, volleyed a fine Boninsegna cross past Sepp Maier for the winning goal in the 111th minute. Franz Beckenbauer refused to stop playing after sustaining a broken clavicle from an Italian foul during extra time: as Schön, the West German manager, had already used one of the two permitted substitutes Beckenbauer (who was critical to the German side) stayed on with his arm in a sling. This match is known as the 'Game of the Century' (Jahrhundertspiel) in Germany, and a marker at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City commemorates it.

Argentina were supposed to be exciting, yet looked at how they played against Germany. I don't think we're getting any treats this year.
