Unlike the USA who put in too many half-hearted performances, Mexico put it all out on the field today and deserve the accolades they got for this match. I could tell from the opening kickoff that this squad was not going to be content with trying to keep the score low -- they wanted to take the game to Argentina, showing no fear, and scoring early. Some great fight from them -- I think it completely caught Argentina off guard, who thought they could skate through this match.
Mexico's A game versus Argentina's B game is about a draw. And yes, there were a few missed calls by the ref. I agree with Seven's last-man red card sentiments -- what was up with Heinze? They guy's brain wandered off into outer space regularly. And the late offsides that wasn't. But all told, I was happier to see a referee for once error on the side of letting the players play a little more ... rather than having a referee stamp their imprint all over the match. And for that, I have few complaints for how this match was officiated.
Of course, at the same time I must confess to being amused by Carlos Simon's second yellow on Lucic in the Germany-Sweden match. Albeit undeserved, IMO, Simon gave that big grin and, as Pablo Ramirez so eloquently voiced over on the slow motion replay of his red card, "Toma esta!" ("Take this!" ... or perhaps more eloquently, "Suck on this, pal!"). Now that was entertainment.
I was glad to see this great Mexico-Argentina match ultimately decided on brilliant play rather than PKs, a refereeing decision, or a cheap goal. And Maxi produced a goal that was deserving of this match.
Definitely the match to top in this WC so far.
