I wonder where it all went wrong for Holland. Agreed, I'm not their biggest fan so I might be a bit biased, but I think there nowhere near the super power they were a couple of years ago.
Well, Holland has never had truly world class array of defenders, have they? Jaap Stam was the only world class stopper they have had since the turn of the century at least.

And no, Frank De Boer was not world class.

We aren't a 'major nation' to start with. We've never won a World Cup so quit talking big of us already
You've won the EC in 1988. Then again, no one is considering Denmark a potential WC champion.

They used to have excellent midfielders and attackers though. Apart from Van der Vaart and Van the man I don't see very much rough talent in that selection.

Belgium went far into the last World Cup only to be unfairly knocked out by Brazil, does that make them a major nation?

Look, it's only 16 million people, once in a while we achieve something that's way beyond our potential (finals, semi-finals). What the hell more can anyone expect from a small country? C'mon, be realistic for a change.

You've played the final in both 1974 and 1978 and had a very good squad throughout the years, with Dutch players playing at the highest club level. How can we not consider Holland a great nation when it comes to football?

Check out the Holland squad from Euro 2000. Six years makes quite a difference, doesnt it.

    Full Dutch Squad
Goalkeepers: Edwin van der Saar (Juventus), Ed de Goey (Chelsea), Sander Westerveld (Liverpool).

Defenders: Jaap Stam (Man United), Frank de Boer (Barcelona), Bert Konterman (Feyenoord), Arthur Numan (Rangers), Michael Reiziger (Barcelona)

Midfielders: Ronald de Boer (Barcelona), Paul Bosvelt (Feyenoord), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Rangers), Phillip Cocu (Barcelona), Edgar Davids (Juventus), Marc Overmars (Arsenal), Clarence Seedorf (Inter Milan), Aron Winter (Ajax), Boudewijn Zenden (Barcelona)

Forwards: Peter van Vossen (Feyenoord), Pierre van Hooijdonk (Vitesse Arnhem), Patrick Kluivert (Barcelona), Roy Makaay (Deportivo la Coruna), Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal).

Rubbish. We didn't qualify for a single World Cup in the 1980s and sucked badly in 1990, failing to win a single game. The following two world cups (1994 and 1998) were good again, the next ones are set to suck. Such is the cycle of a small nation; with little resources you can only be good sometimes, never consistently.

Didn't PSV win what is now the CL in the 80's?

1988 yeah, a total freak year when you look at the statistics.
So you won the CL, you won the EC, you finished second in two world cups, made it to the semi-finals in 1998 and were a serious contender for Euro2000, but those were all flukes?

No, but they are quite clearly part of cycles of a small nation. We can't be consistently good, we can't consistently compete at the highest level. We currently have a reasonably weak squad; of which I think it meets our regular potential. Better squads like the one we had in 1998 only come once every decade, or once every two decades.

It's not brain surgery. Holland isn't Brazil, isn't Italy, isn't Germany. We're too small to be that good, all the time.

You're suggesting it are cycles with occasional peaks, which isn't completely correct.

Well, I think it is :D

Even without the cycles, it's quite clear that currently we're sinking to a lower level after the highs of 98 and 00

Anyway, Serbia and Montenegro and Cote d'Ivoire are in for loads of fun. I can already see Van Basten mumbling "Klaas-Jan... I should've...Klaas-Jan" :D.

I think you're going down big time. In four years time, Belgium will beat you guys. And I'm actually rather confident about that statement. Anywho, you will recover. Whereas your peaks mean you can win the world cup our peaks mean we can be in it.

Despite our small size, in football our country is definately a big one, Erik. Though the Netherlands are surely overrated, our country certainly is to be considered one of the 'major' footballing nations.

agreed.I say it because in my country,Iran,Nederland NT has lots of fans.not as much as Brasil but much MUCH more than Germany.this couldn't happen for a team which isn't major in football.
