Italy are slowly losing that status. This is more and more sounding like Milan boasting about their 7 CL's.
France are quickly gaining ground on both those nations especially Italy. Recent history is important too.
4 WC finals and 2 Euro finals since 98 is an astonishing achievement.
Everytime a country has produced an all time great footballer, that country has gone on to achieve tremendous success.
France with Mbappe and a whole host of talent are probably going to end up winning atleast one more world cup in the near future.

Football was different, yes. There was less competition, absolutely. But from what year should we count WC trophies? The quality of football now and competitiveness is higher than in 50s or 60s for example so does it mean Pele shouldnt be considered an all time great? In 50 years from now who knows how the game will look like so are we going to discredit teams that won WC at the beginning of this century?

Italy have won 1 WC and 1 Euro. So for all the talent and progress they have won 1 trophy more. I dont understand why are people so quick to dismiss Italy. Comparison with Milan? They won Euros last year. Doesnt look like they are stagnating to me.

If you cherry pick the years, sure. 4 or 8 years before that France wasnt even participating at WC, while Italians and Germans played final/won. Spain was at one point considered the fastest talent producing country and they looked set to dominate. But right now they are a laughing stock. So we cant really know how it will pan out. Both Germans and Italians won major trophies not so long ago, especially Italy. They are still clear ahead.
