Simple, this Japanese team is set to play counters, while Costa Rica literally defended with 10 men. They had defensive midfielders, defenders and one former striker who now plays in midfield. All they did was defend the 0:0 and the Japanese couldn't penetrate that defense.

same happened to germany vs japan, they just underestimated japan. still, those goals were comedy gold, no way they lost on purpose, or if they did, that's the least obvious tanked match ever, especially with that ball 99% out of play before the 2nd
