I could have went myself, but I had no desire whatsoever to go there. Glad I didn’t, seems like a total joke.
We heard this crap about Korea and South Africa. Not that they're equivalent to the death and crimes in Qatar. But if you've never been at a World Cup, you're not going to get it. Groups of Japanese and Uruguayans meeting in Qatar and hanging with locals and experiencing mutual cultures in place. That's not something that's restricted to Conde Nast's Top 10 lists, nor should it be.

It’s not like I disagree with the premise. I love it. But I just consider this whole thing to be way too fabricated, as if it’s a Qatari version of the Kardashians. I have nothing in common with their culture, don’t really care to experience it, and have similar options nearby. If I wanted a fake ass trip to somewhere along a gulf or body of water with palm trees and massive high rises I’ll just fly to Miami. Better party scene and no hijabs either.

I don't give a shit about all the virtue signalling from the entitled Western cunts, but Qatar is too small and not culturally appealing to host a World Cup - herein lies the main issue.

I mean, it's like awarding the World Cup to Cyprus - logistically, it makes absolutely zero sense. I love Cyrpus - the weather, the food and the people. It's an amazing place, but it's simply too small. It's the equivalent of having a WC in Eswatini, size wise at least. Now, if you ask Cyprus to co-host with Greece and Turkey (if they can overcome their squabbles), now we have a WC on our hands.

I would definitely go to Cyprus. Have a WC in Crete, that would be amazing.

1) Contrarianism: Questioning that a World Cup should only ever be hosted in a place where the respective sport is popular.
This line of thought defies any common sense. There is no cricket WC in Sweden, there is no ice hockey WC in Australia. No basketball WC in India, no skiing WC in Scotland.
The World Cup has infact been at my doorstep and what made it good was that every bum on the street and every granny in a wheelchair had passion for it and any stray dog could name more transfer rumours than Agresti.

2) Cultural relativism: 'yeaaaa Qatar did many shitty things but putting a spotlight on them is equally bad because uuhmm it's their way of life'. Some cultures are objectively inhumane and should be ostracized, not rewarded, until they adhere to the very basic standards (no need for speedo rubbing but like don't have a slave cast in 2022). Being preachy doesn't equal being wrong.

3) Projection: That anti-Qatar Westerners are just against a 'brown people WC'. Truth is South Africa was widely accepted because Africa is known to be a continent that's crazy for football, and South Africa was the most civilized spot on that continent. It was perceived as exotic and exciting. People are against Qatar because of the two bullet points above.

4) Whataboutism: That human rights violations are scrutinized selectively and swept under the rug in the West rather than bad actors getting instantly mauled by the press and public and then tried. In reality that tiny ass corruption case for WC 2006 has been in our media for the last 10 years and the people responsible are complete pariahs now while the Sheikhs in charge of Qatar will celebrate by shitting in the mouths of russian hookers and laughing at dumb gullible Westerners.

Americans have a certain reputation about being loud and arrogant but I have to say I enjoyed the company of most y’all whenever I’ve been over to the states. Of course there’s bad apples everywhere, but I got along well with you yanks.
Aussies are much much louder.

But even that is not really happening, because there are less foreign fans.

And that's hardly enough. It's the mix of local culture with football tourists. Qatar is a small, extremely oppressive state in the middle of the desert where rules and agreements can change in a second. It's just not appealing at all.

Agreed.

Defending this World Cup and accusing westerners of virtue signalling is ridiculous. Hell, people were against it before virtue signalling was in fashion.

I dont know about it being ridiculous. : The Western media has been using this Whole situation to bombard us with news about how terrible Qatar is and how their culture is
degenerate compared to western standards.

The moral high ground that has been established has been incredibly strong.

I never saw anything remotely close when Russia was the host and thats only a couple of years ago.

I can understand the huge controversy towards Qatar, given the slave labour and the poor conditions they have lived under.

However the LGBT stuff is just ridicolous imo.

Expecting Qatar of all nations to embrace that kind of political ideology is just baffling and incredibly naive.

FIFA probably expected this mess, but dont really care as long as the money machine keeps running. That organization really needs a factory reset
