Guidetti i think. Tattoos, cockiness, etc. Was supposed to be big iirc.
He is on the bench. Ruined by injuries.

Fun guy, he should play instead of Toivonen, but Toivonen is the Mandzukic role of the team (except he can't score lol), so unlikely to be subbed out with so much of the approach relying on him. And Berg the main scorer, but he is useless today...

You could argue that my position on VAR is ignorant in that I almost follow the logic of "if it's only correct 98% of the time and not 100%, throw it out!" But VAR is still a seductive and deceptive false reality. We are replacing a human point of reference with multiple, sometimes conflicting, perspectives aided with slow-motion cameras and then fed to humans for judgement. And with technology, I feel there's a major cognitive gap with fans thinking that VAR eliminates all controversy and human decision-making when, in fact, it couldn't be further from the truth. It's just the level of detail at which we argue calls now

The romantic in me prefers we prioritize the viewpoint of those in the stadium at the match, on the pitch, in real time, and that the match isn't played for remote robots, cameras, and casual fans watching on TV. But what we're saying with VAR is that cameras don't lie. But the truth is they do, and I am not just talking about deep fakes and conspiracies like that.

Hence VAR to me is just a Sisyphean effort to produce "Truth Theater"... a false comfort in a belief that we're closer to the truth and devoid of controversy when that is always an element of a human game being performed and judged by fallible humans.
:agree:

It hasn't made anything less controversial

Football isn't objective and neither are the majority of its rules

But it's a tool that is changing our locus of observation and distorting our perception of what is reality and what is a technologically constructed facsimile of it.

VAR has been a huge improvement in both Serie A and this World Cup and now, with these two in comparison, you can see how badly the CL needs it.

Sure there are some calls that still aren't clear with the replay but I completely disagree with the only 98% throw it out argument.

IMO something like is an absolute necessity. Now that quality of coverage has vastly improved, everyone has an HDR television, ESPN can break recreate and break down decisions with 3D modeling software etc. the glaring referee errors occurring in big games every year has to be dealt with.

you can't continue on as if there is no problem with major refereeing errors in big games, every tournament, every year.

It works for TV viewers. I don't think they deserve priority, however. Or we end up with situations like American football where there are multiple stoppages to promote products every five minutes.

At what point has it really been that bad? Every time they've used VAR in this world cup they do it fast as fuck. Maybe not quite in Serie A but Serie A is a scandalous shitshow in every aspect with or without VAR

Like I added above, I don't know how you can expect to continue on as if game changing referee errors are not a major problem in football and in some of the biggest games too.

I agree that does take a bit of the drama out of the World Cup comes along with debatable decisions but overall it is a positive force as is goal line tech

VAR has been good in the World Cup, but it's still early. I think it's mostly a failure in Serie A because of how it short-circuits game play and disrupts any fan excitement. But Serie A has played a lot more matches than the Cup yet.

And as far as game-changing decisions with referee errors, we will still get those with VAR. That was part of my point.

But much less so, that is our point
