Key word future. We need them now.
Alex, you're not gonna sign top standard players in January, at least not the type of players to take us to the 'next level'. There's a simple explanation for this, those players are either at clubs still competing in Europe, or are far too expensive for us to afford.

There's enough depth and quality to compete in all three competitions we find ourselves in right now. Summer is the time to add real quality, these are the basics lad.

You don't sound optimistic.
Not that I dont believein the youth system but if we are going to wait might as well just give up now.

Im not saying I expected signings now. Im fine with no purchases at the moment. I was talking about the summer mercato.

Yea lets wait 5 years hoping we csn get a winger youth product to help us make the leap in quality.
Investing on talented youngsters is our best way back to the top, those that are good enough can play for us and we can sell the others for significant amounts, registering considerable profits in the process.

We don't have the turnover to compete financially with the other big clubs but we're steadily getting there. Investing heavily in youth makes a lot of sense rather than splashing all our funds on one player who might not even enable us to win the CL and who might flop.

With our developing business model, we'll eventually be able to compete for the CL on a regular basis. We're doing it the right way. You need to be patient, which is something you learn as you get older.

You know it's a transfer window when the X + Y = ZZZZZZZ discussions come in. In short it costs a shitload of money to sign expensive players. Seems obvious, but salaries, signing on fees, and agent fees are mostly ignored. Then you have the issue of being bent over a table any time you try to sign an important player during the January transfer window.

We know our position now. We can make perhaps one signing in this category per season, especially in the position we are now, but before...nah, not really. The squad would be super light, and these are investments.

Bayern won nothing in Europe between 2002 and 2012 and what did they do to get back to the top? They invested massively in youth and worked on their infrastructure and marketing, which is exactly what we are doing. We are essentially imitating Bayern's model, which will take us back to the top.

Look where they are now, that's Juventus in 7-8 years. Learn to be patient, this will serve you well in your life.

I love how there's always a new candidate for a complete mental break down each and every mercato, Nicholas, Joe and now Alex :D

I feel the last sentence is best read in Mr. Miyagi's voice.

There are no disadvantages to signing youngsters unless literally none of them produce. If even one becomes a star, you likely save yourself tens of millions of dollars. Even developing squad players saves you transfer fees and higher wages. Even using them as investments seems fruitful. Most of our young players have seen their values rise. Berardi's rise alone could probably net us a 10M profit if we bought his other half and sold him completely right now.

Barcelona and Bayern produced the two best teams we've seen in years on the backs of their youth products.

Who's to say that a lot of our youth signings aren't already making leaps in quality this season? We have a monopoly on the best young strikers in Italy. The future is definitely bright. I don't agree with bringing Berardi in just yet though.

Lol I know what you guys are saying and yes it makes sense. My whole are argument was though we dont need a whole lot of reinforcement and that a winger worth 20m -25m should be ourbig purchase of the summer.

You don't need a Tuttosport article to figure that out, it's pretty obvious.

We shouldn't just spend 20-25 million euros on a winger just for the sake of it. You have to look at who is available and if the player is worth spending all that money on.

Agree. And the ones we are paying €4m and upwards for are something of a guarantee, they have that bit extra in quality and experience to warrant that price.

I remember we signed Immobile for €0.1m from Sorrento. Sorensen cost €0.13m. Ekdal was €0.6m. When you add the smaller moves up and see where they move to we make money on them.

Everyone is doing that - or at least trying to do it. It's easier said than done.

No one is NOT interested in youth or marketing. Some are just better at it than others.
