Zach, I was just BSing a bit
Also, you're telling me Pereyra was brought here as our starting trequartista? That would be even worse.
Nah, we got him cause he can play both wings and cam, and could also play as an offensive minded cm.
-Our 352 last season was lacking an offensive cm substitute from the bench.
-We want to change to wingers in the future. But we obviously cant afford to sign two wingers and depth in the same mercato. Pereyra can cover both wings and trequartista. This is huge. Immagine Coman and/or Berardi break trough, and we could get a big name winger from the market. Pereyra could be the cover for all 3 positions, or if we get 1 winger to break trough, he could start the opposite side and allow us to use that winger to maximum capacity.
Exhaggerated example : Imagine you got david beckham aged 20 from united. Pure winger who cant play centre. Pereyra normally wouldnt be good enough to start. But starting him and beckham, would enable to play the worldclass talent to its best capability.
Italian teams have had this many times in the past, where an average player made a formation possible that got most out of the talent around him, and as a result made the talented player look 10x better then he actually was. When this average player then gets a transfer, they suddenly fail at their next team.
Think about how many times that happened
In short, this is why having a player that can cover every am/w position is a big factor
