Wow.
Can you imagine being an Udinese fan? They have no ambition and seem to see football as purely business. They are good at it, though. The amount of money that they are able to bring in whilst maintaining excellent business relationships with other Serie A clubs. As a fan, though why would you even bother? By the time you get attached to Alexis Sanchez or Isla or Handanovic or anybody else besides Di Natale they have been flogged off again.

Well that has put me well and truly in my place.
At least with Celtic and 'selling' clubs in other leagues there is a real chance of silverware. Look at the dutch league, for example. I'm sure Ajax fans didn't mind so much that Suarez was sold because they would still have a crack at the title and cup as well. Not so with Udinese. Have they ever won a scudetto?

I suppose that how Udinese, and many other clubs as you mentioned, operate is more of an indication of the state of modern football rather than about one club in particular. But Udinese do not seem to make any real efforts to convince their stars to stay.

Thats because they know that they cant. Their economic basis isnt strong enough and the top Italian sides can still pay hefty fees for the Udine players. Its the same in all leagues, really - except for England where most clubs have found their level and are slightly trying to improve and still their stars are sold the very same day that United come knocking. Yes, Im looking at you Everton and Newcastle.
Teams like Udinese, with their financial standing, going and trying to over-reach for something that is almost impossible is exactly how to get into serious financial trouble.
They are no more in a position to commit the cash to try and win a scudetto than Celtic are to try and build a team to win the CL these days.

My point with Udinese is that they don't even seem to try and build towards winning trophies. It appears (without me looking very far into it at all, mind you) that they re-invest money garnered from transfers in scouting and signing new prospects. It just seems to be a self-sustaining system without any ambition.

What should they do instead? They are terrific at signing prospects, and that way they atleast get a season or two out of players like Asamoah and Isla (who was fucking awesome at Udine), before they sell them on. In what world are they going to sign a player of Asamoah's quality once he's blossomed into his potential?
