Marcelo is a fantastic winger but a very poor defender. No way he's #1 in the world.

I wouldn't really say he's poor. He has improved drastically when it comes to defending.

Most left backs now tend to be attacking ones, there aren't really any good defensive left backs anymore.

I'd still put Ashley Cole ahead of all of those mentioned, they are basically left wing backs moonlighting.

A couple of years ago I'd tend to agree with that, but now, not really.

Versus Italy he was all over the place defensively. At times he was just stuck at the center of the pitch when Italy were all the way in their half. Any other team on a good day would have exploited that space easily.
