Like I said in another thread football (at both club and international level) has been on a decline since the mid 2000s for me. Just think how good we had it in the 90s and early 2000s? Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Del Piero, Nedved, Maldini, Totti, Raul, Shevchenko, RVN, Figo, Zidane, Batistuta, Vieri, Henry, Vieira etc all in their prime. There is nothing in this current crop of so called "superstars" who come close to those guys strutting their stuff in their peak.

Nowadays there is less great players, less great teams, more boring football (and yes Im another one who finds the current Spain and Barcelona's tiki taki shit boring) too much fucking money + mercenary players, too many oil sheikhs killing the game slowly by hoarding all the so called top talent. World Cups are boring as fuck now and the CL isnt good until it reaches the QF's.

Your right about the type of players compared to now and then but soeone could argue that the playing field has even out now? PLayers are bigger faster stronger and with the scientific research for physical training and conditioning its just insane. Just saying:vinny:

i sometimes feel sorry for the juve supporters who didnt follow the team in the 90s...we were often magnificent and had some amazing players. Kohler, Moller, Juilo Cesar, Vialli, Di Livio, CONTE, Peruzzi, Montero, Baggio,Tachinardi, torricelli, ferrara, zizou...and some of the others, who also impressed like jugovic, sousa, deschamps...too many to recall with my sri lankan colleague attempting to make me get back to work. But my heart is warmed by even mentioned those names. Truly one of the best teams in the world to be a part of in the 90s.
Yes! I said this on another thread but I am worried my twin girls who are 19months old might never know the true Juventus. I remember watching Juve when I was a young boy/teen with my family and always thought cant wit to do this with my children and such but now when they sit on my lap and watch with me I think fuck once they get old enough to know what they are really watching is Juve going to be at a competitive level again? or am I going to have to be one of those old fucks who yaps about the glory days of Juventus. Before merdatti and Intermerda ruined us.

Yeah, let's not overreact. People tend to look at the past through pink colored glasses. TBH, football is probably at its peak, like many other sports. The players are, on average, better, fitter, there is more tactics involved, etc. Its difficult to compare, but I'm sure that in the 90's people were saying that the football cant compare to the 80's etc. It's the same old thing, a shift of generations and we tend to remember fondly things from our youth.

You still have fantastic players today, but since the game has changed and the overall standard gone up its queastionable how good some of the players you mentioned would be today, even in their prime. And if you say that Barca doest play beautiful football and is boring, maybe we should all return to watching Capello's Juve, they were a whole bunch of fun :D

All I'm saying is that you're getting old. Dont worry, it's normal :D

Seriously..some whack ass stuff to say

Messi,Cristiano,Hazard,Ribery,Schweinsteiger,Etoo,Tevez,Aguero,Forlan,Rooney,Vidic,Fernando Torres,Drogba,Mario Goetze,Nuri Sahin,FAbregas,Nasri,Modric,Essien,Van Persie,Lahm,Neuer,Neymar,Falcao,Ozil,David Silva,Pique,Chiellini,Evra,Alexis Sanchez..i could go on for hours

The number of star players nowadays surpasses those of a decade ago by a good margin

More money, resources, qualified professionals are being added to the game by teams year by year

People here just think the game back then was better because we were better and that screams out ignorance to me

Thats ridiculous.

Its fair enough to suggest that the game has changed, because it has.

You think players like Cruyff, rijkaard, gullit, baresi, maldini, zico, mara-fucking-dona, hugo sanchez, di stefano, puskas, hagi, stoichkov, romario, roberto baggio, bobby moore, peter shmeichel, lev yashin, socrates, garrincha, peter fucking pele, klinsmann, koeman, beckenbauer, matthaus, effenberg, kempes, passarella, sivori, platini, cafu, roberto carlos, b. charlton, georgey best, keegan, dalglish, cantona, neeskens, van basten, eusebio...are 'surpassed' by the generation of the Now and near Now??? Not a chance.

There have always been and there always will be some wonderful football players. By now, with less war, better facilities, better training methods, better health care, and much more $ in the game than ever before, true, the standard of football should have increased, at the top and bottom of the game. but i don't see any obvious difference between the stars of today and the stars of the 50s or 60s or 80s or 90s...true greats are true greats, regardless of the era. And having been watching football for 20 years, i notice zero upsurge in the standard of the best of the best players.

Well said. I bet a lot of these people criticising me werent alive/didnt watch football in the late 80s to late 90s and wouldnt remember seeing a lot of the awesome players who played back then. To say guys like fucking Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Van Persie, Nuri Sahin are better than the players I mentioned is fucking ridiculous. The players are better athletes these days, but not better footballers.

Fucking LOL @ these players being anywhere near the greats I listed in my list of awesome names. Even the top names you listed like Messi, Ronaldo, Eto'o, Tevez, Aguero etc arent as good as the playrers from the late 90s.

There is no doubt modern medicine and training facilities have made players faster and stronger, but it hasnt necessarily made them better players.

And this statement "The number of star players nowadays surpasses those of a decade ago by a good margin" is false as well. Yeah there is more media coverage now and a lot more hype around players but doesnt necessarily make them better than what they really are.

And how is it more competitive? Look how strong the Dutch, German, French, Romanian, etc leagues were in the past? Now there is basically only two top leagues in the world.

Gheorghe Hagi was a beast - why are there not players like that any longer?
Because footballers arent as good as they were 10 (or more) years ago. They are better athletes now. But dont tell this to the "now" generation they live in denial.

Just because Barca dominate all before them and create an illusion that they are the greatest team ever, when in reality the competition for them isnt as strong as it was in the past. I honestly think the old Juve and Milan teams of the past with modern training/medicine facilities would more than much up against Barca.

Everyone has got their own opinion and that should be respected

But mocking a defender like Vidic!!!Come on

Like i disagree with Shevchenko, RVN, Vieri, Vieira being considered as great players

Zlatan, David Villa, Etoo and Mascherano are better

If players like Hagi and Zico had access to the training methods, medicine, treatments etc of today, you could only imagine how amazingly good they would have been as they were already unbelievably good in their time.

LOL. Vieira in his peak >>>>>>> Mascherano. No doubt in my mind.

You could arguably add Eto'o to the generation of players Im talking about anyway. And you seriously underrate Sheva as well. Absolute beast.
