On another note ladies, Athletico Madrid are also on the verge of signing Diego. So Turan, Diego and Falcao? Dayyyem. That's what I call a mercato if they pull it off. Watch and learn Beppe.

it's not about prestige only. it's about demonstrating ambition, something which i feel we can't do due to finishing 2 years without cl.
our ambition will be to contend for the scudetto/CL in 2 years, atletico will never contend for either. But as i said turan is not a big name, my gripe with marotta is his inability to strike a big deal, hes too gun-shy, too provincial.

If we succeed in attaining Alex & Vargas - that would end up being an additional ~EU25m in spend on top of the EU38m spent for Lichsteiner, Vucinic, and Vidal. Total gross spend of EU63m (knowing that Ziegler, Pirlo and Pazienza were free). The EU35m we spend in buying out the loans for Pepe, Grosso, Matri & Quags DO NOT count for this years budget (they were already accounted for last year). So EU63m in gross spend.

Remember, that it was well documented that Juve COULD do a NET spend of EU50m this year. Sissoko was sold for 7m, We get 1.5m for Melo (with the remaining 11-12m a year later if we chose not to sell him). Assuming we can sell Martinez, Manninger, Amauri & Iaquinta for EU18m collectively, we are looking at a Net spend of ONLY EU36m. This would seem to leave EU14m left over for another player.

I have a suspicion that this EXTRA player will be a central midfielder. Currently, we have Pirlo, Vidal, Pazienza and Marchisio. Pirlo is quite unique among the 4 and arguably, we would need a 5th central mid. My guess is that could easily be AQUILANI. We refused to buy him out for EU17m (which was a good move by Marotta) and Milan seem more keen on Montolivo. I reckon there is a pretty good chance we can get Aquilani for around EU12m which would be a good deal. Then our squad would be complete.

Potential squad list for 2011/12:

GKs:
BUFFON
STORARI
KIREV

DEFs:
LICHSTEINER
MOTTA (or could be sold and we get a back RB on loan)
ALEX
CHIELLINI
BONUCCI
BARZAGLI
ZIEGLER
DE CEGLIE

MIDs:
KRASIC
PEPE
VIDAL
PIRLO
MARCHISIO
AQUILANI
PAZIENZA
VARGAS
PASQUATO

STRIKERS:
VUCINIC
QUAGLIARELLA
MATRI
DEL PIERO
TONI

Matchday line-up:

---------------Buffon----------------

Lichsteiner---Alex---Chiellini----Ziegler

Krasic-----Vidal------Pirlo------Vargas

----------Matri--------Vucinic--------

Bench: Storari, Bonucci, Pepe, Marchisio, Aquilani, Del Piero, Quagliarella

That would be a very STRONG squad. I would be totally satisfied with that transfer season even if it meant we didn't get a real game-changer like Nani, Aguero, Vidic or Rossi.

Aquilani is ok not worth more than 7-8M
I`d personaly wouldnt mind having him as a backup for Pirlo if we could close up a deal for 6M and wages lets say 2M a year

But I dont think Aquilani or Liverpool would agree to this...

Anyway if this to happen it should be after we get a LW and a CB

TBH we'd hardly be league contenders in Spain either, so you cant really fault Atletico there, with the Real and Barca teams dominating ;)

If we could get a team like that, we could actually start building something every year, piece by piece.

Vucinic - Rossi

Vargas - Vidal - Pirlo - Krasic

DC - Lugano - Chiellini - Licht

Buffon

Say De Ceglie looks shaky next season, then go spend the big bucks on one fullback. Say the year after Pirlo looks done, sign one good central midfielder to replace him with. Thats a healthy way to build a team. Not get 5-6 crappy players every season only to do the same the summer after because they didn't deliver as everybody thought. You'll end up being stuck in signing average players and we'll never get to the quality signings.

The only signing I'm disappointed in so far this summer is Ziegler because he was brought in to be a starter and I think he's shit. I have nothing against Pazienza for example since I know he's not going to be a starter.
Well said, but unfortunately, in the past years we have chosen the quantity over quality path, we are unable to make that quality leap and buy a decent player,
our brand has now diminished in an extend that we prolly never do...
