I would sell both Chiellini and Bonucci -

Why Chiellini you ask?

Because these days it's no longer good enough for a CB to be a strong tackler (Chieliini is strong at tackling but also lunges in way too much at times giving away dangerous free kicks and penalties), a good CB also needs to have an adequate level of ball skills and not simply clear the ball wherever possible. Chiellini's ball skills leave a lot to be desired and it's a major reason why we are unable to hold possession for an extended period of time, our CB's usually end up belting the ball forward giving it away.

there is no point in selling chiellni because it is hard enough to get one good cb, let alone two.

besides i think chiellini's game can be improved when you have midfielders that make themselves available for the pass, which pirlo and vidal will do. this is also the coach's responsibiltiy in training.

i doubt we are going to get a cb anyway. i think our market will end with the purchase of a forward and maybe a winger, if we are lucky. it will probably be us getting rid of players after that.

i think conte is okay with having sorensen and barzagli as backups for our main two. and considering we are only playing serie a and coppa, it is more than enough in quantity even if the quality is questionable.

Chiellini is not the problem, as he was pretty much world class when he had a competent partner(Legrottaglie) and a coach who knew how to organize a defense(Ranieri).

I am ready to trust Chiellini and Bonucci but we really need to fix our midfield and play 4-3-3 because Pirlo can not play in a two-men midfield. With Vidal-Pirlo-Marchisio in a 4-3-3, I am certain that our defense would improve greatly.

We need a quality winger to switch to 4-3-3 though.

last season it was because of our defense as a whole yes.
I would say the team as a whole. When the team in front of you don't pressure the first lines, then you have twice the work you should. Look at the second goal of yesterday, for example. Yes, Barzagli should've kept doing contention, but Pazienza/Pirlo (look at Pirlo in that goal, I'd burn him if it wasn't a friendly...) should be there to pressure Djalo and don't let him shot in the first place. Barzagli was kind of doing the midfielders' job...

Last year in the counters we also got doomed in tons of 1x1, yes, with Motta and Bonucci screwing up essentially, but right now the problem aren't our CBs.

4-2-4 wont work especially on the counter attack because we will get killed everytime. pirlo and vidal do not stand a chance against a 4 man milan or napoli midfield. we need to play a 4-3-3 atleast in order to prevent conceding as many goals as last season. marotta stated that a defender is not there top priority and if were lucky wel get a winger or a striker, best situation is that we concede as little as possible and buy a defender in january.
