With Hernanes possibly leaving and Lemina injured, this leaves us with barely 4 fit midfielders for 3 competitions. I think the management is smart enough to avoid a situation like this. I get the feeling that we're not done in this mercato just yet.

The solution shouldn't be spending 18M on another (injury prone) defender. It should be solving the injury problems we have.

We still need to sign a starter RB as well

but the guy was a starter when healthy and is one of the best CBs in the world. its not like we will get an opportunity like him every summer and there are better CBs just lying out there waiting for us to pick them up. if we can get someone as good or better whos healthy for the same money or less (Silva for free for example), i wont complain though

Benatia is a very good player, worthy of that 17M price tag BUT... I think we dont really need him if we have Rugani and we can add a free transfer CB while at 2018 We will have Caldara so...
BTW Whats going on with T.Silva? Did he renew?

Benatia has been seriously impressive when he has played though. I think his top form this year has been better than any of our CBs have shown. In some matches he had Barzagli tackling and Bonucci ball-playing at the same time.

Ya I think Beppe will end up taking him for less than 17M, possibly free.

Why are you dodging my point though ? Rugani was picked over Benatia when both were healthy.

And why he can't be counted on ? Does he suffer regular muscle injuries like Benatia who goes down every 2-3 games ? Bonucci was injured for a while too. We can't count on him too ?

Rugani is a quality defender too who is growing to become top CB? They both have identical playing numbers of 530ish played minutes and 7 games total or so.


We have a luxury issue, lets not make us getting a top CB for mere 18m when Barzagli is old/declining and Giorgio is injured too much, as some kind of problem for us.

Benatia is a luxury signing for me. Better get some FB who can play CB when needed and permaswitch to a 4 man back line. I still don't know if we need 5 defenders for 2 CB positions.

I never said Rugani cant be counted on, that last part of my post was obvious sarcastically meant to Benatia being too injury prone to be counted on

As to answer your question, rotation, tactical reasons and form. Rugani played 4 of his 7 Serie A games when Benatia was injured, 1 of his 2 CL games (one he played WITH Benatia vs Dinamo) too. He played 3 straight games in December + the Supercoppa because he was in great form (one of our best performing players in some games) and was forming a really good partnership with Chiellini, but now hes back to the bench again. You can't expect him to never play just because we have better and more experienced players so to ask why he was picked ahead of Benatia for one month is kinda silly

5 defenders isn't allways the case as we saw how often Barzagli and Chiellini were gone, and Bonucci out for 2 months etc.

I repeat Barzagli is 36 and Chiellini 33 soon, how the heck is getting a younger top defender a luxury?

Khedira, sturaro, marchisio, pjanic and mandragora so that is 5 midfielders
