I don't see why Benatia would remain under consideration. 18 m is a no brainer for a player of his standard.
I also value Benatia highly. I'm just not sure if we should purchase him if we are to play with a back 4. Also his injury record is an issue. For me it is a hard choice. He may prove to be an ideal Barzagli replacement, but it may also turn out that Barzagli will play longer on the highest level than Benatia due to his injuries.

Considering both Chiellini and Barzagli are injury prone Benatia should stay. We need to have 3 CBs available most of the time to be able to go 352
We don't have to be able to play 3-5-2. That was the formation we used because it best fit our players. Don't stick with it for the sake of it if it doesn't suit the squad we have

According to Kicker, Juventus could not consider to activate the €17m buy-option in the summer for Benatia.

Great news. No Benatia No 3 man back line
Benatia is a very good player, worthy of that 17M price tag BUT... I think we dont really need him if we have Rugani and we can add a free transfer CB while at 2018 We will have Caldara so...
BTW Whats going on with T.Silva? Did he renew?

Bayern said they would terminate Benatia's contract so is it possible we're going to forego the purchase just to sign him on a free?

The current squad is built on the 352 and unless we make another overhaul in the summer i see no reason why we shouldnt keep it as our 2nd formation. It is one of our strengths compared to other big european clubs and getting rid of it completely would be a mistake

It was built on a squad where we had two beastly wingbacks and a BBC which was the strongest part of our team. Neither is the case now.

We can always play it in a one off game because we have BBC + Rugani (we should also sign a cheap 5th CB). No need to keep the expensive Benatia who will waste space on the bench or keep Rugani last in the pecking order

We still got it, BenatiaBC, AS and Cuadrado. What made it weaker this season is the lack of Pogba and his 2 way game. The team was built around him and Pjanic was kinda just put in his role which he can't play the way Pogba did. A more dynamic midfield would make it as good as it was last season, a Tolisso or Goretzka or Dahoud would add a lot to it.

Another thing, dont forget the injury crisis we had this season in defense. Even Rugani got injured for a few weeks then after he returned it was Bonucci who was out injured. I dont want to imagine such scenario next season in March/April with 4 CBs (or 5 with the 5th being someone mediocre). Benatia when healthy was a starter next to Bonucci and Chiellini and I think he will be next season too. I see no reason why we should simply pass on him unless the management has serious concerns about his injury

Having said that, i think it won't be our primary formation next season but I also dont think we will move away from it completely. Neither we should imo

3-5-2 has slowed down because we don't have any mezz'alas.

But it's still an interesting formation as we have the wingbacks for it, the CBs for it, the regista for it and a striker partnership for it.

The solution shouldn't be spending 18M on another (injury prone) defender. It should be solving the injury problems we have.

We still need to sign a starter RB as well
