I think we are in a position now to make one marquee signing every summer. I'd say go all out for James in the summer, and Verratti for 2018. The most important thing is to keep our key performers and star players, which means no more selling vital players like Vidal and Pogba.
Serie A won't be an attractive league if we keep shipping away our key players, and as much as it pains me to say it, we need some competition, and the likes of Milan to get back to being relevant. Eventually, we should be able to offer salaries of 9 million.

Just for fun I did some data analysis using statistics such as possession, key passes, and others to figure out which central midfielders in world football are statistically superior.
Just to give an idea of my rational - I would use for a possession score, for example, by taking the players passes as a percentage of that team's passes. I also would standardize pass accuracy and adjust it based off total team pass accuracy. For example: Sturaro's score would be a joke because he is on a team with a high passing accuracy..
Anyways here are some names at the top of the list:
-Naby Keita
-David Di Gennaro
-Thiago Alcantara
-Ander Herrera
-Steven Defour
-Toni Kroos
-Fabinho
-Maxime Gonalons
-Sven Kums
-Luka Modric
And the worst:
-Andrea Barberis
-Simon Padoin
-Paul Seguin
-Daniel Wass
-Marten De Roon
-Roger
-Badu
Out of 250 midfielders (must have played 8 games): Juventus players rank...

Pjanic - 143
Hernanes - 84
Rincon - 144
If anyone is wondering how Hernanes ranked so high...His defensive stats are very good (very good tackling rate), and he is probably the best midfielder offensively from outside the box with the most shots and goals. His weakest attributes are in possession.

Yeah, context is important. Some are obviously not suitable.
With Gonalons actually, he should be rated even higher. I omitted aerials in my analysis. I am going to add that, and it is one of his strongest attributes. Without doubt Gonalons, seems statistically very fitting.
The other guy who is very interesting is Keita, although he is very short and won't win many aerials. He is like Kante 2.0.
Also interesting that by far the best players on offensive stats is Pjanic, put his possession and defensive stats are atrocious.

-On Inter, in a given game, Geoffrey Kondogbia is dispossessed 2.5x per game, almost 25% of his teams dispossessions. His Z score is over 3.
-Koke is passes 17.5% of his team's total passes, with a Zscore 2.79 vs. other midfielders.
These are meaningful stats. The question is how to best use them.

These are meaningful stats. The question is how to best use them.
That is why you consider other stats along with them - such as percent of passes forward and backwards. And take them into context, including the league they play-in. No statistic is perfect, and it is incredibly naive to become indoctrinated to advanced stats, but they have value and need to be used in the right context. Does it mean we should go out and buy Sven Kums? obviously not. But in context with other sources, these stats can be very valuable.
