Im not in favor of Witsel, but a experienced midfielder is what we need. McKennie, Bentancur, Loca + Rovella and potentially Fagioli next year, I think that we are targeting the right profile but not the right player. Someone like Kroos would be great. There should be some other option instead of Witsel.
Lets not get ahead of ourselves. They are relegation battlers right now, they need transitional and gradual signings to improve their stature and reputation (do you remember Man City's first signings? I do, not glamorous), they will be attracting top club rejects after big paychecks and without much options in coming window or young up and coming talents ok with missing CL couple years. Only after they shown more and become better will they attract another caliber of players (they just hired Eddie friggin Howe lol, so lets take a break on the ambition talk).
For now, they should be lucky they are attracting Rabiots and Coutinhos ("the could be doing so much better" players have better options then current Newcastle). If you just take a gander at their championship level squad, you will see thats an improvement.
My ~2 years and 3-4 years timeline is actually based on City. They had their first summer in 2009 and by 2012 or 2013 they already were a top level club squad wise and they started competing for top4 even faster than that.

City weren't a team in relegation battle when the takeover happened and they already had some decent players in the squad. Newcastle are much further from challenging than City were at the time. Also 2009 wasn't their first summer. They already signed some players in 2007 when Shinawatra was in charge and then in 2008 signed many important players.

Cherubini sent a scout to watch Benfica striker Darwin Nuñez. Vlahovic remains the number 1 target for Juventus. Cherubini has already taken the first steps & will make an attempt in January to sign Vlahovic . Darwin Nuñez is the alternative should Juve fail to land Vlahovic.(Tuttosport)

Talks continuing between Juve & Atletico Madrid, the aim from Juve’s side is to lower the €35M fee for Morata. There was a gentleman agreement between Paratici and atletico madrid to sign Morata in 2022 as his contract expires in 2023.(Tuttopsort)

In January Kulusevski could leave, Juventus are evaluating the situation. Kulusevski could be part of the Vlahovic deal to lower the price, or he could leave if a suitable offer is made. Tottenham and Atalanta are the most interested clubs( Calciomercato)

Vlahovic is not listening to the offers from Arsenal and Tottenham .At the moment it is certain that he prefers staying in italy [La nazione]
Darwin Nunez who?
No problem Paratici can continue his gentleman agreement with Tottenham.
Kulu to leave? Well he isnt playing like a superstar here at the moment and its true the money could be of use..
Darwin Nunez, 'the next Cavani', to Benfica from Almeria for 25m. 21 years old, 16 goals in Segunda, tall, strong, high motor. Seems like a decent prospect.
Hopefully that ends Cavani to Benfica. Come on Atletico.
He will be very good, but again, last thing we need now is a striker. Get better creation and more control in midfield, don't make Morata and Kean play so far and back to the goal all the time and they will score too.
I think when you see how we played without Dybala and how we play with him, its night and day how we play when we have ACTUAL attacking threats up top. Chiesa pulls defenders to him. Dybala pulls defenders too him.
Morata is a walking offsides flag and is given a lot of room to be offsides.
Watching our matches, so much of our final third issues come from ineffective strikers. A true attacker to score goals for us in Serie A and CL would go a long way. We haven't had a true striker in awhile.
