Most important is the resale value, which was never going to be there with Higuain.
To this day, the Higuain move just makes very little sense to me financially. Buying a striker JUST in their prime for that number is staggering and I have to believe some of it was financial hubris and wanting to kind of flip a finger to Napoli by activating his buyout while we had money to do it.

that's a huge difference indeed due to their age. but we just bought vlahovic, and at this moment all i hope is that he'll retire here at the age of 35 as an undisputed club legend.
Definitely, but, serious injury aside, at least you cover your own ass buying a talent at this age. A PL club would give us the majority of the money back as long as he's not a total flop, which is unlikely given his quality.

It was a Bayern-esque move to kill the competition and guarantee the league for the next 2-3 years but it was also the beginning of our (financial) downfall.
€90M on a 29 year old following it up with a €400M investment on a 33 year old crippled the financial health of the club.

oh yeah, we could sell vlahovic for a hefty profit tomorrow morning. he'd need some convincing though lol

and while i was happy with higuain as a player, the financial side was always gonna turn into some kind of a mess. ronaldo's arrival only made it even worse.

The Higuain move was the same play as Ronaldo, we thought we'd arrived at the finish line and just needed to add guaranteed goals to push us over the edge and get a CL win. We definitely too our eyes off the ball in other areas though.

The investment of that 90m into our midfield and a younger striker like Jovic was more passive but could've paid off so much better and created a true dynasty.

Hindsight 20/20 and all that. This new transfer focus on young, promising players and not 27-30 year olds should really be the step we need as a club for both continued success and financial stability. Now, if a player wants to leave after 4-5 years, they're 27 instead of being 32.

To be fair though, the club probably thought Higgy had minimum 4-5 years left at the top level given that he was coming off his best season and still 28. Lewandowski is having his best seasons at 31-33 the past couple years. Cavani is 34 and was still going strong a year ago. Dzeko having a great season at 35. Ibra been playing great in his 30s for years. Unfortunately Higuain, while a hardworking professional on the pitch, was more like an Lolzilian with his fitness and diet off the pitch and tanked his own career because of it and Juve suffered for it. The club probably could have done better due diligence on assessing his fitness levels before we bought him and realizing he was nowhere near as professional about that as the above strikers.

We had a generation of players not ageing wel: Higuain, Pjanic (31 now), Costa (31 now) and even Marchisio stopped way to early due to injury. Let’s not forget Sandro aswel.
