Yeah, Falcao has definitely not shown nearly enough evidence to indicate he's past his prime. He's an injury concern, sure, and will be rusty, but he's still a top tier striker. Every half decent player has his price, and while I wouldn't pay 35 million for him, I'd easily take him on loan for the rest of the year, because he's certainly an upgrade over Llorente.
Even Van Der Vaart - while I wouldn't pay 10 million for him, getting him on a cheap loan for the rest of the year has little downside. The January transfer is the time to add low-risk players who can improve a team at a reasonable cost, without shaking things up too much.
I'd be totally good with:
- A Falcao loan: He clearly would be a great addition.
- A Van Der Vaart loan: All those saying we shouldn't touch him...what is the downside to getting a player for little cost? Even if he were to play back-up to Coman/Pereyra, he could potential come on in the later stages of the game and contribute given his experience.
I'd good with:
-A purchase of Mata who isn't cup-tied, but also fits strategically with the team.
-A purchase of Firmino/Tadic who could grow with the team, and add value immediately.
I'd be less good with:
-Paying 25 million for a player like Schurrle or Shaqiri who would be cup-tied. You can do that in the summer...
I'm extremely against buying a player from a Serie A team because they'll hose us like they always do.
My preference is to get a stop gap on loan for winter/spring, and make a smart, strategic purchase in the summer. Ie: loan Falcao/Van Der Vaart/Some other temporary addition, and sign Shaqiri/Schurrle/Eriksen, etc. in the summer.
