I don't play Duke Nukem so that one's not applicable to my life. But don't despair, mik, there are jokes far better than Vista out there, how about e17 and gnu/hurd?

Most excellent indeed, it's set to go gold just after Alpha Centauri blooms into a supernova.

e17, also known as enlightenment v17, is the new upcoming version of the most kick ass, crazy, funky, cool, fresh desktop environment for linux. e16 was released in 2000, e17 has been "right around the corner" the last 4 years.

Just to clarify, I meant as a joke, not as an OS.

Dear lord, I just noticed "you are subscribed to this thread". I don't know how it happened, but I hope it won't have any repercussions (my inbox is a little sensitive these days).

I guess, up until this e17 is available, you linux people would just refer to those stuff as "useless eye candy" ;)

Well gnome and kde and others are seeing a lot more activity than e17. Of course, there is a target group for e and some people will definitely use it, but the buzz that e used to have is pretty much history in these xgl days.

    Martin,

In this thread you have laid into Vista.. even though you admit you havent tried the beta... Not to mention that what we have seen so far is indeed only a beta... No one knows how good or bad Vista will really be on launch... Yet you continue to bemoan it..

Throughout this thread and others you continually assault windows...

Yet theres one thing you have never given... A viable alternative to windows...

So what is it... What other option is there for A: Me and B: the average everyday, non computer geek man in the street ?

It's all well and good slagging something off, but please tell us what we can use instead to run on our pc's ??

You don't need to be a geek to run Linux on your system and for almost every program under Windows there is an equivalent open source application under Linux.

You truely believe that the average person on the street could easily run Linux?

As for software... Not one of the programs i Use everyday to enable my family to live can be used on Linux...

Windows? Mac? of course... But not Linux

I believe an average person with some effort can use Linux.

Well I don't know what programs you and your family use, but so far I haven't had any problem in not running the programs I need.

I tell you, in a way or another Linux is no longer the complicated operating system it used to be. If you want it to be complicated, you can make it so, but if you just want to use it as an application, I see no obstacle in that.

    .
and there lies your problem... The average person doesnt want any effort... they want to turn their computer on and effortlessly do their thing and go...

The effort I meant lies in the fact of installing an operating system and following instructions. Usually the average person buys a computer with the OS already installed (basically due to Microsoft's monopoly).

You don't want effort? Just wait until Rami logs in, he will post a computer product that has ubuntu already installed and configured on it. Would you trust these products? Personally I would.
