I also didn't know who it was. I had to search.

Since the picture is obviously taken sometime in 1950's or 1960's while the guy was in his 70's or 80's and since judging by his clothes he wasn't a politician, banker or another filthy rich guy, all that was left to do was to search among scientists and writers born in the 1870's and 1880's.
