As one historian put it, he "had more impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in Earth's history", he had 100 patents, and developed both the TEL gasoline additive (which released tons of lead into the atmosphere) and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) -- the last most famously through the discovery of Freon.
And yes, he's one of the few notorious inventors who was killed by one of the contraptions he invented: after contracting polio, he devised a system of ropes and pulleys to move himself out of bed that ultimately strangled him. :sick:
