Here most people are holding until the next presidential election (2012). If Chavez is reelected for six more years I'm guessing a lot of people (including myself) will throw the towel and search for another place that offers better quality of life than here.

I kinda have to, as I've told you before about my uni its a German one so when I finish the 5th level of German language Im off to Germany to spend 6 months in a German uni of my choice and another 6 months working for a German firm that is specialized in my major which is CS.
Its sad to admit but he does have supporters, plus most public employees would vote for him in fear of losing their jobs if someone else was elected. The big problem here is absenteeism and people who simply don't care and don't vote. If all of them voted a candidate from the oposition would have a shot at winning

Would Chavez hand over power if he lost? I'm not sure how entrenched his supporters are in the government but would he have enough pull to remain in charge if he chose to ignore the results?

Would it be a fair election? Probably not. He has given Venezuelan IDs to a lot of immigrants (Colombians, Chinese) but he can't control if those people vote or not. In past elections some irregular situations have happened but statistically those situations not happening wouldn't have reverted the results.
Would he ignore the results? No idea. The only time the opposition has won an election these past 12 years with him in charge was when he tried to change the constitution and supposedly he didn't want to admit that he lost but the military made him. I don't know if his (armed) supporters would come out to the streets to defend him, but everyday more and more people in the slums are turning against him because he's not solving their problems and they're starting to realize that finally
