Where are you on Dawkins Scale?

  • 1-Strong theist. 100% possibility of God. In the words of C.G. Jung, 'I do not believe, I know"

  • 2-Very high probability 'I cannot know for certain, but I strongly believe in God

  • 3-Higher than 50 per cent but not very high. Technically agnostic but leaning towards theism

  • 4-Exactly 50 per cent. Completely impartial agnostic.

  • 5-Lower than 50 per cent but not very low. Technically agnostic but leaning towards atheism.

  • 6-Very low probability, but short of zero. De facto atheist.

  • 7-Strong atheist. 'I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung "knows" there is one

Can you please find your place on the Dawkins scale.

1) Strong theist. 100% possibility of God. In the words of C.G. Jung, 'I do not believe, I know"

2) Very high probability 'I cannot know for certain, but I strongly believe in God '

3) Higher than 50 per cent but not very high. Technically agnostic but leaning towards theism.

4) Exactly 50 per cent. Completely impartial agnostic.

5) Lower than 50 per cent but not very low. Technically agnostic but leaning towards atheism.

6) Very low probability, but short of zero. De facto atheist.

7) Strong atheist. 'I know there is no God, with the same conviction as Jung "knows" there is one

Could mods make this into a poll please?

Expressing it in terms of odds feels kind of awkward, but it's still an interesting poll. My feeling says 5 or 6, but my rationale says 4. Which of both are we supposed to follow in this poll?

I think that's what Dawkins says in his book, if memory serves.
The God Delusion? I haven't read it. As far as I can tell, I mostly agree with him, but I find him obnoxious. I read his The Blind Watchmaker once. I found it repetitive and dull.

Personally I think this measure is deeply flawed. A metaphysical proposition is not something I attach a probability to, it isn't quantifiable. I used to think of myself as an agnostic, but I never thought "50/50, that sounds right". I sort of can't say how "probable" one or the other is, because it's not something in the realm of numbers. Nowadays I think the most rational stand for a non believer is 6: it's not true, but life is unpredictable and you can never rule anything out with absolute certainty. It doesn't make sense to attach a number or range to it, though.

    I am @ 6.99999 :D

I do leave one very, very small chance of some sort of deistic god existing. He /she is unfalsifiable by definition and we can talk about him/her in terms of level of certainty, not absolute certainty. In any case, even if he/she does exist (in this form), it makes absolutely no difference to our lives or life of this universe.

I think that Dawkins is 7 when it comes to Abrahamic gods and when it comes to Eisenstein god, he leaves a possibility open, but still considers it highly unlikely.

Will refer to the book before i say this with "absolute certainty" ;)

This thread is like evolution in action. You can see the mutations. Some brains were created with the ability to believe there is something "bigger" out there, and some without it.

    :D

Our brains evolved with capability to wonder, which is great.:)

    Too many "wonder-off" :D

Guys, seven is a great choice. I met few guys that declare themselves as 7 and believe me, i would not dare argue against their position, they would shred me to pieces :D
