But Afonso de Albuquerque? He was pretty badass and doesn't get mentioned enough in history.
He partnered with Magalhães (Magellan), who kept him sane in Malacca.
Magalhães circumnavigation around the globe is still my high watermark of crazy human explorational achievements. Landing on the moon was planned and predictable by comparison. And he did it surrounded by suspicious Spaniards who wanted to mutiny and throw him overboard the minute they left port in Sevilla.
But without Afonso de Albuquerque on that trip a decade later, he kind of lost his mind and turned it into a personal suicide mission where Elcano had to salvage it.
We still honor that crazy trip in the Lisbon Metro at Parque station:
