Hasn't Black Pete been controversial for decades now? Like pretty much all black face characters?
Yeah it hardly exist anymore. Only in some parts in the east of the country in some villages you'll probably find some people dressing up as Black Pete the oldschool way. And crazy enough as far as I know on the Dutch Antilles he's still black:

The whole debate is like 10-15 years old now, before that nobody talked about it.

There are one or two folk characters in little English villages who have black face that aren't really anything about racial or Imperial caricatures, but that is a minority, most of them are as the roots from Morris dancing (Moorish) had most of the people dressed up like that. Obviously times change and it's not 1600 anymore, some traditions inevitably have to fall by the wayside. Personally I think it looks stupid anyway.

I never really participated in the debate because I dont care which colour he has, but the idea that we always celebrated it including black people here while it would be a absolute shock in society nowadays is quite funny. The intend was never racist, in fact kids love Pete because he's acrobatic and he brings the gifts. There have been years where these weeks would be quite tense with all the discussions everywhere.

Interesting/funny to understand what someone from another continent thinks about it. Maybe its a shock for them while 25 years ago nobody ever cared to think anything about it.
