Yeah, it's a bit creepy at the end. But there are gestures in Tibetan culture that would get you whacked in the US. I find it hilarious that everyone is a pedo now, from Joe Biden to the Dalai Lama.

He knows enough Western culture to know how that would look to others in this climate, especially in public with the cameras rolling. So that's totally brain dead. And what added was the kid was not having it.
But you're suggesting that this guy waited until age 87 to publicly come out as a pedophile. And for doing something more than just a few parents have done with their children as a form of silly playfulness. Hell, I think it's absolutely gross, but there are tons of people who do that with their pet dogs, but I don't call it bestiality.
We live in weird paranoid times where kids have been sheltered and prevented from walking to school because everyone is a child abductor. And we’ve sexualized any form of physical touch.
Any form of physical contact now is viewed with suspicion, whether it's two men or women holding hands in public, etc. I like the "la bis" tradition among many Europeans when greeting because it's platonically affectionate ... but it also freaks out the haphephobes that have been normalized today. I've even had lesbian friends kiss me on the lips, but not for a moment do I ever believe they've "converted" or anything.
Physical touch has become taboo in Western culture: "he touched my shoulder at work, therefore he's a sexual predator". You can't give someone a hug without second-guessing or thinking "grope". No wonder so many people are dying of loneliness. We've turned everyone into virtual lepers.

I fully agree with what you're saying.
But at the same time I am someone who does not like being touched by strangers or even coworkers. It doesn't really happen with men, but women will sometimes touch my forearm or my back during conversation. There's nothing sexual about it and it's not threatening at all, but I still don't like it even if I will never make a fuss about it. So I do understand how we evolved the way we did, especially when it could be perceived as threatening under certain circumstances and depending on the physical characteristics of the people involved. I know it may sound cold and a bit aloof, but I think a lot of people really want their personal space.
But at the same time I am someone who does not like being touched by strangers or even coworkers. It doesn't really happen with men, but women will sometimes touch my forearm or my back during conversation. There's nothing sexual about it and it's not threatening at all, but I still don't like it even if I will never make a fuss about it. So I do understand how we evolved the way we did, especially when it could be perceived as threatening under certain circumstances and depending on the physical characteristics of the people involved. That's totally legit though. And you got it... women will sometimes just touch your arm or whatever and it's not exactly hopping in the stirrups on the gynochair.

But I'd like to think that we don't have to go full-on consent culture just to make casual physical contact with someone you know. Different cultures have different standards of physical contact or even standing distance. But asking, "May I shake your hand?" seems like the apex of sigma simpdom.

No, that would be a nightmare. And I get what you said before, it's not a good idea to ban all physical contact. At the end of the day human beings do need some form of affection, even in professional environments. I think mutual respect and at least trying to gauge what the other person can appreciate should suffice.
