I'd say this comes down to more of what you're looking for. If you want a one night stand in a bar or a "fuck buddy" somewhere, it would obviously be stupid to "catch feels" or imply that you are. If you're looking for something more serious though, would it not make more sense to show emotion? I do agree though, most men colossally fuck it up when approaching a woman. I can't even count the amount of times I've seen them say or do dumb shit with one of my friends and just ruin it for themselves. But, in my opinion, women also have very unrealistic expectations when considering what they bring to the table as well. For this reason, it turns me off to approaching women (I'm also anxious as all hell) when I know I'm most likely going to be rejected because I'm not at least an 8-9/10 and 5'6" tall (basically don't even bother).
But they DO work, I've seen it work. But it all depends on 1) what you're expecting out of it, 2) who you're expecting out of it and 3) how long you're willing to try. But I agree that it's much easier over an app and therefore holds less weight.
The thing is, I'm not into bars and clubs. That's just not me. So for me to go into a bar and try to get with someone wouldn't make much sense for me personally since that would mostly highlight my inadequacies rather than show me in a good light. As for other settings, it is considered by some to be borderline sexual harassment these days:
I have tried physically approaching women, but I just freeze up and look like a dumbass. But I struggle talking to any stranger anyway so I know it's not just that. I've gotten A LOT better at it over the years, but the way I see it these apps are just an easy way to work my way into killing two birds with one stone. But I definitely do understand where you're coming from, just have to work into it.
