It's for fashion, the whole tanning thing is a thing of status nowadays, a sign of wealth that said tanned person can afford to travel to exotic places and escape the winter, kinda like the same way that in the past in parts of europe and asia where light/pale skin was associated to wealth because they didn't have to be under the work under the sun.
