In 2010 the GDP per capita in Syria was roughly what it is in Serbia today - that is the viewpoint from which Dule was writing his post. Taking into account that those who are well off are the ones who have been able to flee (a trip from Istanbul - Sweden runs you roughly 4,000 dollars per person, that is what they need to spend outside the relative costs of actually getting out of Syria and living expenses in Turkey while you wait for shipment), the people Dule sees were the more resourceful before the war. Don't ask me to name sources, but you can google all this and find credible sources that will confirm, I'm using numbers that were used internally at my place of work during research and published in AI reports.

Thinking about whether I should go to the gym tonight. Feeling a little under the weather, but not terrible. Probably a cold coming on and I don't like to give people my sickness, but this could be my last chance to get a decent lift in before I'm wiped out for a week or so. Decisions.

Go for a run and do pull ups, push ups and a few minutes of the good old plank at home.

Sounds awesome.

A friend has a uninsulated fishing shack in Uruguay. I can see the temptation. Whole different way of living though.
Oh, I would not be able to live in those conditions. I was thinking about buying beach-front property and constructing a nice villa. Lots of business opportunities as well.

The world can be a weird place like that today. Last week I was talking to a refugee from Eritrea. You'd expect them to be pretty poor and perhaps they even are, but she was using the newest Samsung Galaxy. Last year I spoke to someone from Somalia who told me that most of her payments happen through a mobile service.

I don't mean to insult anyone, but you wouldn't expect someone who is basically living in a shack to keep track of her bank account with an iPhone.
Nope.
