I can't get over the news of those Syrian refugees who were suffocated in a truck while being smuggled to Austria. Don't remember the last time something disturbed me like this, i can't get rid of the image i have made of their dying moments in my mind. I hate this, I hate this, I hate that nothing is getting better, I hate this powerlessness.

Not that you can ever compare tragedies, but why do you feel the truck incident affects you more than, say, all the drownings and conditions of the boats trying to reach Lampedusa, etc.? Or the boats that were left adrift from Greece when the crew abandoned them?

It's simply horrifying, no other way to describe it.

The worst thing is that most official reactions only seem to target smuggling, not realising that it's merely a symptom, not the actual problem.

It's so fucking frustrating to not be able to really do anything against it.

Not sure, i guess the absolutely painful and slow nature of such death, moments that they were struggling to make space to breathe, trying to ask the driver to stop, knowing that they are dying one by one... the details my mind keeps creating are so graphic and alive i really haven't been able to function normally since i heard the news. To realize how powerless i am, how literally nothing i am is demoralizing.

I completely lost hope when i read what one Hungarian official had said about the crisis, he was worried about letting in "jihadis". Blaming smugglers, as if seventy people would have chosen to be packed in a truck if those precious borders had been a little kinder to them, to people who are fleeing a war every freaking country, directly or indirectly, is responsible for.
